Clane combines a long monastic history with routes along the River Liffey and a golf course. If you’re looking for a hotel in Clane, these different highlights can help you plan your trip: you can consider whether history, riverside scenery or golf should be the focus of your stay.

Monastic History Between the Abbey and Friary

St Ailbhe, Bishop of Ferns, founded Clane Abbey around 520 AD; Clane is also the site of the monastery of St Ailbe. Clane Friary was a later, separate foundation: Gerald Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald founded it in 1258. It was one of Ireland’s earliest Franciscan monasteries. The two dates mark distinct points in the town’s history: the early abbey and the Franciscan settlement.

The abbey grounds were landscaped as the Garden of Remembrance. Plaques there document the involvement of people from Clane in significant events in Irish history. At Clane Friary, information panels illustrate the former extent of the complex. A damaged effigy of a knight on the site is said to represent Lord Offaly. According to local accounts, Franciscans return to Clane Friary each year to celebrate Mass there.

Routes and Nature Along the River Liffey

Clane overlooks the River Liffey. The Liffey Walk is a winding, paved riverside path in Clane. Access is available from Sallins Road and the Alexandra housing developments. The route and access points are useful landmarks if you’re planning to include a riverside walk in your trip.

Clane Liffeyside Nature Park is a wilderness area on the River Liffey, managed and maintained by Clane Community Council. At least four bat species have been observed there. In contrast to the paved Liffey Walk, the park focuses on wilderness and its wildlife. A cycling map of the wider Clane area shows cycle lanes, segregated cycle paths and bicycle stands.

Golf as Another Local Highlight

Millicent Golf Club is an 18-hole USGA parkland course in Clane. The River Liffey borders several holes. The river is therefore not only a landmark for the walk and nature park, but also shapes individual holes on the golf course. These different connections to the Liffey offer more than one perspective on Clane’s landscape and activities.

More Places to Visit in County Kildare

If you’re considering places beyond Clane, County Kildare offers its own cultural and landscape highlights. Donadea Forest Park is home to Donadea Castle and the estate that was the Aylmer family’s former home until 1935. The Lake Walk is 0.8 kilometres long, takes about 30 minutes and is accessible to everyone. There are also three permanent orienteering courses: a short one of 1.8 kilometres, a medium one of 3.4 kilometres and a long one of 4.6 kilometres. These details allow you to compare the route lengths directly, while the Lake Walk also gives an approximate walking time.
