Aclare lies in the south of County Sligo on the Inagh, a tributary of the Moy. The riverside area, trails, and local musical tradition provide specific points of reference when planning a hotel stay. Aclare Bridge and the adjacent recreational park shape an area on the western edge of the village. Nearby, Lough Talt adds a lake, a circular walk, and birdlife to the picture. You can consider whether to focus your trip more on architecture and culture, a route, or nature watching.

Aclare Bridge and the riverside area

Aclare Bridge is a five-arch limestone road bridge that crosses a river; it was built around 1850. On the western edge of the village, it is the central feature of a riverside recreational park. Next to the bridge is a community park with a viewing platform and picnic benches beside the Inagh. The bridge is therefore the historic point of reference, while the platform and benches mark the adjoining park as a place to look out over the river and spend some time.

Trails and nature around Aclare

The Aclare–Fidon Walk is 4.8 km long and starts and ends in the village. The circular walk at Lough Talt is nearby, approximately 7 km from Aclare, and is 8 km long. It is therefore longer than the route between Aclare and Fidon and provides a point of comparison when planning your distances. The lake’s diverse birdlife includes wild ducks, swans, and dippers; which species you can see varies by season. Lough Talt also has a plentiful population of brown trout and is a destination for anglers. Check the applicable rules and access conditions before fishing, as they may change.

At Old Gorterslin Road, by Frenchman’s Grave overlooking Lough Talt, at least three French soldiers are buried. This place adds a historic point of reference near Aclare to the nature and walking themes.

Music and village life

Aclare is strongly associated with traditional Irish music; many notable musicians and singers come from the village. A parade takes place in Aclare every year on St. Patrick’s Day. If you plan your visit for that day, check the programme details in advance: they may vary from year to year.

County Sligo: further cultural history

Beyond Aclare, County Sligo offers its own cultural and historical context. Carrowmore, Ireland’s largest and oldest collection of Neolithic tombs, is located in County Sligo. It has more than 30 surviving monuments that are almost 6,000 years old. Sligo Abbey, a Dominican friary with extensive surviving medieval remains of its church, sacristy, and chapter house, is also located in County Sligo. Carrowmore and Sligo Abbey complement the local bridge and musical tradition with regional perspectives on Neolithic monuments and medieval monastic architecture.
