Ross Port lies on the southern shore of Broadhaven Bay and is part of the Erris Gaeltacht. The Rossport Walk provides clear information about the route and walking time; coastal features and historical evidence add to the picture of the area. This makes it possible to plan a specific walk while also taking in several distinct periods of local history.

Walking Along the Tidal Shore

The Rossport Walk is an easy 10-kilometre walking trail. It starts and ends at the Barr Thra crossroads. The estimated walking time is 2 hours and 20 minutes; it may vary depending on conditions. The distance describes the length of the route, while the time is a guide to how long the walk takes.

The route passes a tidal shore known for its cockles. A detour from the Rossport Walk leads to an old pier built in 1891. The route thus brings together a coastal feature and a dated historic structure.

Prehistory and Local History

Rosdoagh Court Tomb, also known as Rossport Court Tomb, was built around 5,000 BC. Its ruined central area is about 9 metres wide; 16 stones remain. The width refers to the central area, and the number refers to the surviving stones. The site lies above the point where the Glenamoy River flows into the Broadhaven estuary and overlooks the sea.

Rossport House adds a later date to the local history: it was built in 1832 by Samuel Bournes and can be reached from the Rossport Walk. The Rossport House estate included an industrial knitting and sewing school that some tenants were able to attend. The building history of the house and the history of a specific institution on the estate thus sit side by side.

County Mayo: Museum and Other Walking Options

In the wider destination of County Mayo, the National Museum of Ireland at Turlough Park presents Ireland’s rural past through objects, rare archival photographs and films. The museum offers workshops, lectures and guided tours throughout the year. The gardens at Turlough Park are home to a variety of birdlife, flora and fauna, and are designated as a Green Heritage site. This museum-based approach to the rural past differs from the specific prehistoric and architectural evidence found in Ross Port.

For regional comparison, County Mayo offers other clearly described types of walks. Croagh Patrick is 764 metres high and has been a pilgrimage destination since pre-Christian times. The main summit route starts in Murrisk on the Louisburgh Road (R335) and is 7 kilometres long, including the return journey. The Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail is a different route: this 59.9-kilometre long-distance trail passes through County Mayo’s coastal and mountain landscapes and takes three days to complete. Compared with the 10-kilometre Rossport Walk, these details illustrate different route and time formats: a summit route and a multi-day long-distance trail.
