Accommodation in Bellagarvaun
The Owenduff/Nephin Complex Special Area of Conservation (SAC) lies partly within the townland of Bellagarvaun. The protected area has code 000534; its formal designation is recorded in a legal instrument from 2023.
Protected Area and Landscape
The qualifying conservation interests include oligotrophic waters with very low mineral content on sandy plains, as well as natural dystrophic lakes and ponds. Also listed are watercourses from lowland to montane elevations, with vegetation assigned to the Ranunculion fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion alliances. The list therefore distinguishes standing waters from flowing waters and connects specific habitat types with their vegetation.
Wetland and heathland landscapes are also represented: North Atlantic wet heaths with Erica tetralix, alpine and boreal heaths, blanket bogs, and transition mires and quaking bogs. An asterisk marks active bog areas among the blanket bogs. Stands of Juniperus communis on heaths or calcareous grasslands are also included. The protected area lists Saxifraga hirculus (marsh saxifrage) and Hamatocaulis vernicosus (slender green feather-moss) as named plant species. The range of conservation interests thus extends from aquatic habitats to bogs, heaths and individual species.
More to Explore in County Mayo
County Mayo provides a distinct regional context. The historic Bangor Trail runs through the Nephin Beg Mountains in northwest Mayo. From the 16th century onwards, it served as the main route between Bangor and Newport; today it is used primarily by recreational hikers. This contrast over time highlights how its role has changed: once a main historic route, it is now a recreational trail.
Another place of interest in County Mayo is Croagh Patrick, which stands 764 m high and has been a pilgrimage destination since pre-Christian times. The main route to the summit begins in Murrisk on the Louisburgh Road (R335) and is 7 km long, including the return journey. This is distinct from the 59.9 km Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail, which is planned as a three-day walk; it passes through the coastal and mountain landscapes of County Mayo and combines ancient monastic heritage with views over Clew Bay. For planning your time, these are two clearly different types of route: a summit route with a stated round-trip distance and a three-day long-distance trail.
For a cultural highlight in County Mayo, the National Museum of Ireland in Turlough Park offers a different perspective: objects, rare archival photographs and films convey Ireland’s rural past. Workshops, talks and tours are offered there throughout the year. The gardens at Turlough Park in County Mayo are designated as a Green Heritage site and are home to diverse birdlife, flora and fauna. Mayo Local Link bus route 454 connects the museum with Castlebar and Ballina daily.
