Recess: Lakes, Fishing and the Connemara Giant
Accommodation in Recess
Lakes, Marble and the Connemara Loop
Recess is a scenic stop on the Connemara Loop. Glendalough Lake is near Recess, while Derryclare Lough lies on one side of the town. Together, the lakes provide specific reference points for the landscape around the town. Recess is also associated with the green Connemara marble quarries on the lower slopes of the surrounding mountain ranges. The lakes and marble therefore shape two distinct aspects of the town’s profile. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Recess, these features can guide your choice of location: decide whether you’re most interested in the lake landscape, fishing or cultural connections.
Sculpture, Crafts and Pilgrimage Site
The Connemara Giant is a 20-foot-tall sculpture outside Joyce’s Craft Shop in Recess. Mark Joyce of Joyce’s Craft Shop created it in 1999, initially for no apparent reason. The sculpture and the Irish crafts and traditions maintained by the shop therefore share a point of reference. Following a major fire, Joyce’s Craft Shop has been closed since 9 July 2026. If the shop is part of your travel plans, check before setting out whether its closure status has changed.
Nearby is Mám Éan, also known as Maumeen or Mamean, a pilgrimage site in the Maumturk Mountains. The small chapel Cillin Phédraig is located at the site. This is distinct from the themes found in the town: Mám Éan is a pilgrimage site in a mountain landscape, while the sculpture and crafts are associated with Recess. This distinction can help you separate features of the town from a nearby pilgrimage site when planning your stay around cultural interests.
Fishing in Recess and the Surrounding Area
Recess is a well-known fishing destination. The area is home to the Derryclare Butts, stone fishing stands on Derryclare Lough, where people fish from the stands and the shore. Lough Inagh is also a lake for angling, and boats can be hired there. The main difference between these options is the fishing location: the stands and shore at Derryclare Lough, or boat hire at Lough Inagh. The Lough Inagh & Derryclare Fishery is in the Inagh Valley on the R344 between Recess and Letterfrack. Fishing seasons and regulations can change. Check the current rules before planning a fishing trip.

Walking Trails in the Wider Galway Destination
In the wider Galway destination, walking trails can be compared by distance and destination. The Family Trail in Coole Park is an easy, 1.75 km walk. It passes the site of the former house and goes through the walled garden to the Autograph Tree. The Seven Woods Trail in the same park is 4.5 km long and passes a viewpoint overlooking Coole Lake as well as extensive wetlands. In Connemara National Park, the 6.5 km Diamond Hill Walk leads to the 445 m summit of Diamond Hill. The trails differ in both distance and destination: a garden and a tree, a lake view and wetlands, or a summit. This provides a practical basis for comparing further walking plans in the Galway destination.
