Flúdir combines swimming facilities, geothermal features and outdoor recreation. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the swimming pool in town, the natural pool at Hverahólmi and other options for relaxation and exercise. Each destination has a different focus: swimming pools and a steam sauna, hot springs, a recreation area, as well as frisbee golf and football golf. When planning, you can consider whether to give greater priority to swimming, observing nature or outdoor activities.

Swimming and Geothermal Energy

The swimming pool in Flúdir is 25 metres long and has two hot pools as well as a natural steam sauna. These features distinguish it from the Secret Lagoon at Hverahólmi near Flúdir. When choosing between the bathing locations, the pool’s size and additional hot pools are the main features of the swimming pool; the Secret Lagoon, by contrast, offers a natural pool and a geothermal spring setting.

The Secret Lagoon, locally known as Gamla laugin, is a natural pool at Hverahólmi, near Flúdir. The geothermally heated pool stays at 38 to 40°C year-round. Several hot springs are located around the Secret Lagoon, near Flúdir; a path around the natural pool allows visitors to safely observe boiling and bubbling springs. Litli Geysir, a small geyser that erupts every few minutes, is next to the pool. While the pool temperature stays within this range year-round, Litli Geysir erupts at short intervals.

Leisure and Finding Your Way Around Town

Lækjargarðurinn is a recreation area in Flúdir. Facilities include, among other things, an inflatable air cushion and a barbecue shelter for outdoor picnics. The availability of these facilities may change, so check before your visit. If outdoor recreation is a factor in your travel decision, Lækjargarðurinn is clearly distinct from the bathing locations as a recreation area.

A notable landmark in the town centre is Félagsheimili Hrunamanna. In front of the building stands the sculpture Alda aldanna by Einar Jónsson, a sculptor from Galtafelli. It was unveiled in Flúdir on 17 June 1977. The first hole of the 9-hole frisbee golf course opened in Flúdir is beside the community hall. The two landmarks are easy to distinguish: the sculpture stands in front of the building, and the first frisbee golf hole is beside it.

Markavöllur is an 18-hole football golf course four kilometres south of Flúdir, between Miðfell and Galtafell. The course is set in the countryside, with mountain views and a glacier in the background. By contrast, the first hole of the frisbee golf course is in the town centre beside Félagsheimili Hrunamanna. The two types of golf therefore differ in both hole count and setting: the location of the first frisbee golf hole is specified as being in the town centre, while Markavöllur is south of town in a rural setting.
