When looking for a hotel in Laugar, the town’s recreational and cultural attractions can help you decide whether it is the right destination for your stay. Highlights include an outdoor swimming pool with several pools, a short walking loop through Laugar in Reykjadal, and a long history of schooling. These offer a range of experiences: swimming outdoors, walking through the settlement and valley, and exploring the history of the local school. You can start by considering which of these aspects of the town is most relevant to planning your trip.

Swimming Pool and Recreational Facilities

Laugar’s swimming pool has a 12 × 25-metre outdoor pool, two spacious hot tubs, and a paddling pool for younger children. The outdoor pool offers the opportunity to swim outside; the hot tubs and area for younger children are also part of the facility. The swimming pool is in the same building as the sports hall and is close to local sports and recreational facilities. It serves local residents, students at Laugar College, and travellers. If you are planning your visit well in advance, please check whether it will be possible to visit on your chosen date.

Walking Loop through Laugar in Reykjadal

The “Laugar in Reykjadal” trail is a short, easy loop that starts at the swimming pool. From there, it heads north to Stóru-Laugar and returns through the residential area above Laugar School. At Stóru-Laugar, the trail includes a short walk around a historic complex of buildings; this site is in the immediate vicinity of the destination. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the impressive buildings of the secondary school and across the lush Reykjadalur Valley. Fertile farmland and the valley’s green landscape are also among the features you can experience on the walk. The trail follows the river. The secondary school buildings are a focal point, while the valley and farmland form the scenic setting.

School History in Laugar

Schooling has taken place continuously in Laugar in Reykjadal since 1925. The history of Laugaskóli is considered part of the cultural history of the people of Þingeyjar for much of the 20th century. Another historical landmark is Húsmæðraskólinn, the school in Laugar built in 1929. The two dates refer to different things: 1925 marks the start of continuous schooling, while 1929 marks the construction of Húsmæðraskólinn. The walking loop also offers views of the buildings of Laugar’s secondary school, making the history of schooling part of the local perspective on the walk.

Swimming or Walking?

The swimming pool and walking loop offer different ways to experience Laugar: one is a specific bathing facility with several types of pools, while the other is a short, easy-rated circuit offering views of buildings and scenery. If you would rather spend time in the water, focus on the outdoor pool and the two other pools; if you would like to explore the surroundings on foot, the walking loop passes through the residential area above Laugar School and offers views of the school and the valley.
