Churches, School and History
The Church of Evangelismos tis Theotokou stands in Aroanía’s central square. According to an inscription, it was built and painted in 1703. The Church of Agios Georgios is a three-aisled domed basilica and is considered to be 50 to 80 years older than Evangelismos tis Theotokou. A three-aisled basilica divides the interior into a central nave and two side aisles. “Domed basilica” refers to a basilica with a dome. The term therefore describes both the layout of the interior and the building’s form. These two terms help explain the architectural description step by step: first the division of the church interior, then the defining dome feature.
The Greek School of Sopotou was founded in 1796 with funds from the bequest of Athanasios Tsipiiras. Tsipiiras was a merchant from Patras and was originally from Sopotou. Today, Aroanía’s stone elementary school serves as a cultural center; in summer, the village association shows films in its courtyard. A bequest is a gift made through a will; in this case, it provided the funds to establish the school. Thus, alongside the year 1796, the form of support is also part of the Greek School’s history. Tsipiiras’s origins in Sopotou and his work as a merchant in Patras connect the benefactor biographically to both places.
The Folklore Museum in Aroanía preserves numerous family heirlooms. They illustrate the history of the region and the everyday lives of people in Sopoto.
The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, located near Sopoto, is part of the destination’s surrounding area. According to an old inscription that no longer survives, the church was built in 1616.
