Explore Oía through its old harbors, maritime history, and sunset views from the castle. On the wider destination of Santorini, you’ll find additional themes centered on distinctive landscapes, history, and food.

Oía’s Harbors and Maritime History

Ammoudi and Armeni are Oía’s two old harbors. They are two distinct places. You can watch the sunset from Oía’s castle. The harbors and the castle therefore represent different local points of interest. The Santorini Maritime Museum is also located in Oía. It was extensively renovated and redesigned in 2022, and highlights the role Santorini shipowners and captains played in shaping Greek maritime history. Its subject therefore ranges from local figures to the history of seafaring in Greece.

Landscape and History on Santorini

Santorini is the southernmost island of the Cyclades. The island group is characterized by a landscape of active volcanoes; the caldera was formed by a massive eruption around 1600 BC. This brings two different aspects of the landscape into focus: the caldera, whose formation is linked to a specific eruption, and the volcanic character of the island group.

Pyrgos was designated a protected settlement in 1995. The ecclesiastical collection at the Profitis Ilias Monastery in Pyrgos opened as a permanent exhibition in August 1997. These dates refer to different things: 1995 to the town’s protected status, and 1997 to the exhibition’s opening. Akrotiri preserves exceptionally well-preserved Minoan frescoes and buildings that were buried beneath volcanic ash.

Trails, Activities, and Events

A trail along the caldera rim runs from Imerovigli to Oía and offers views of the sea, the caldera, and the volcano. On Santorini’s southeast coast, the shoreline is well suited to sailing and kitesurfing; parasailing and views of the Aegean are also available there. While the caldera-rim trail focuses on the landscape, the southeast coast is all about sports and Aegean views.

The Ifestia Festival takes place on the third Saturday in September and features a re-enactment of the volcanic eruption with fireworks. Santorini Experience is held every year by the Municipality of Thira, its Department of Culture and Sports, and Active Media. If either event affects your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

Culinary Highlights of Santorini
