Andros can be explored through several distinct themes: in Chora, archaeological and maritime collections take center stage, alongside the history of the Lower Castle. The island also offers an extensive network of hiking trails. This gives you two different scales to plan around: specific cultural sites in Chora and a route between Central and South Andros.

Museums in Chora: Archaeology and Seafaring

The Archaeological Museum of Chora on Andros displays finds from the Geometric settlement of Zagora. The collection also includes inscriptions and sculptures from various sites on Andros. They date from the Archaic period to Venetian rule. A copy of the Charta, Rigas Feraios’s map of Greece, adds another exhibit to the collection.

The exhibits also include the Hermes of Andros: a Roman copy of a statue type from the 4th century BC, attributed to Praxiteles. The Hermes is a distinctive feature of the collection alongside the finds from Zagora and the inscriptions and sculptures from different periods.

The Maritime Museum of Andros was founded in 1972. It displays historical freight and insurance contracts, as well as nautical diaries documenting the lives of Andriots at sea before the War of Independence in 1821. Lithographs of Andriot ships and the first Greek steam freighters, which came later, are also part of the exhibition. Chora is therefore home to two distinct areas of interest: archaeological finds and works of art on the one hand, and documents and ships from maritime history on the other. These focuses can help you narrow down your interests when choosing cultural sites to visit.

Castle History in Chora

The Lower Castle (Kato Kastro) in Chora was built during the rule of Marinos Dandolos, the first Latin ruler of Andros (1207–1238/43). It served to protect the Chora area. The castle stands on a small island and was fortified with towers. Its walls follow the island’s contours and rise vertically from the natural rock. The fortification’s shape thus adapts to the island’s rocky terrain.

The Castle of Chora was built in 1207 and now survives only as a ruin. It is located on Chora’s waterfront. Its construction date and present condition provide a brief historical timeframe for this part of the town’s history.

Hiking Trails and Routes on Andros

More than 25 hiking trails of varying difficulty levels are mapped on Andros. They cater to both experienced and inexperienced hikers. The total length of the island-wide trail network is estimated at nearly 300 kilometers or possibly more. This figure refers to the network as a whole, not to a single hike.

One specific route is Hora–Dipotamata–Korthi, which connects Central and South Andros. When planning your trip, you can use both the larger trail network and a named route between two regions of the island for orientation. The route and the total length of the network describe different scales.

In the wider region, Agia Thalassini is another cultural site: the chapel was built on a rock. It adds a different architectural feature to the museums and castle history.
