Exochori lies on the edge of the Viros Gorge on the southwestern side of Taygetus. Historical records and the “I Androuvista” Museum can also be found in the village, while monasteries and a tower are nearby. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider nature, local history and cultural destinations as distinct points of interest.

Landscape and hiking

The Viros Gorge is accessible from Exochori. A hike through the gorge to the sources of the Viros River takes about two and a half hours. This approximate duration gives you a concrete reference point if you include the hike as a separate focus in your travel plans. More than 700 plant species make up the distinctive flora of the area. The flora and the hike offer two different perspectives on nature: regional plant life and a route with a named destination and an approximate time requirement.

Local history and museum

Exochori was first mentioned in 1278, as Androuvista, in a Venetian court record. In 1465, the village appeared in a list sent by Petros Medikos of the armed men that villages could muster for a possible uprising. These are two distinct historical contexts: an early mention of the village and a later reference to a possible uprising.

You can visit the Historical and Folklore Museum “I Androuvista” in the old primary school building. The collection includes objects from local folklore traditions, including weapons, traditional costumes, agricultural implements, woven works, photographs and old coins. The museum offers a tangible connection to local traditions and complements the dated references to the village’s history with another perspective.

Monasteries and building history nearby

The Vaidinitsa Monastery is located near the destination. The feast of the monastery church is celebrated on September 8, with pilgrims from the surrounding villages taking part. Samouil Monastery is also nearby and is fortified: an enclosure wall and a tower protect its katholikon. A katholikon is the main church of an Orthodox monastery; at Samouil Monastery, the wall and tower protect this church. An inscription in the katholikon gives the year 1633; it refers either to the foundation or to the painting of the katholikon. The Kitriniaris Tower is also in the municipal district of Exochori, near Samouil Monastery.

Plan according to your interests

The destinations offer different points of reference for planning your trip: the hike has an approximate duration, the feast has a date, and the museum has a location in the village. If you are prioritizing an outing in nature, you can set aside a block of time for the hike to the sources. If you are more interested in local history and traditions, the museum offers a cultural visit in the village. If you are planning a trip specifically for the feast, check the latest arrangements in advance.
