Isthmía: Canal, Sanctuary and Beach
Accommodation in Isthmía
Isthmía combines a location by the canal with archaeological history and the organized beach of Kryfi. When choosing a hotel, it helps to weigh these different features according to what you want to focus on during your stay.
Location by the Bay and Canal
The village of Isthmía lies at the western end of Kalamaki Bay and near the southeastern entrance of the Loutraki Canal. On the Corinth Canal side of the village is one of the two submersible bridges currently in operation. The bridges connect Central Greece with the Peloponnese. The submersible bridge on the Isthmía side is intended exclusively for private motor vehicles. If crossing the canal is important to your travel plans, take this restriction to private motor vehicles into account.
The Sanctuary of Poseidon and the Isthmian Games
The Isthmian Games were held in the area of Isthmía. The Sanctuary of Poseidon was one of the four Panhellenic sanctuaries; the other three were Olympia, Delphi, and Nemea. The games and the sanctuary give the area two related but distinct historical points of reference: athletic competitions and religious worship. Compared with the museum’s specific exhibits, this history places Isthmía within the wider tradition of Panhellenic sanctuaries.
The Archaeological Museum of Isthmía
The Museum of Isthmía is located in the settlement of Kyra Vrysi in Isthmía, next to the archaeological site of the Panhellenic Sanctuary of Poseidon. The entrance area displays selected finds, sculptures, victory steles, and part of the sima of a temple dating to the 4th century BC. The sima is a component of the temple roof; this exhibit adds an architectural detail to the other objects.
The Archaeological Museum displays finds from Mycenaean cemeteries in the area, the Sanctuary of Poseidon, the Roman bath, the Justinianic Wall, Rachi Hill in Isthmía, and the port of Kenchreai. Notable exhibits include glass panels from the Temple of Isis in the port of Kenchreai. The museum’s location beside the archaeological site creates a clear connection between the collection and the Sanctuary of Poseidon. The glass panels, in contrast, point to a different place of origin: the Temple of Isis in the port of Kenchreai. In this way, the collection’s scope extends beyond the immediate area.
Kryfi Beach and Ruins in the Area
Kryfi Beach in Isthmía is an organized beach. It adds a specific coastal feature to the area’s historical attractions. Beach facilities may change; if this is important to your decision, check what facilities are currently available in advance.
The area of Isthmía contains ruins of temples dedicated to Poseidon and Melikertes-Palaimon, as well as a Roman theater and stadium. Together with the museum collection, they offer a broader historical perspective, with religious sites alongside a theater and stadium. The ruins are associated with the area of Isthmía.
