Anafonitria is a historic village in the mountainous northwest of Zakynthos. It lies at an elevation of about 340 metres in a tranquil rural landscape. Together, the elevation and landscape give the place its rural character; the monastery in the village adds a historical focal point.

For a sense of location: Anafonitria is about 28–30 km from Zakynthos’s central port. These are two different points to consider when planning your trip: the elevation and landscape describe the character of the place, while the approximate distance locates it on the island.

Monastery and Local History

The 15th-century Monastery of PanagĂa AnafonĂtrias is in the village. In the wider region, the Monastery of AnafonĂtria was probably founded in the 15th century by Leonardo III Tocco, Count Palatine of Kefalonia and Zakynthos, and his wife Lappa. The foundation is recorded as probable.

In the wider region, the Monastery of Anafonítria now serves as the parish church of the nearby village of the same name. A religious tradition from the area tells that Saint Dionysios met his brother’s murderer at the monastery and forgave him. Its parish function describes its present-day ecclesiastical role; the encounter belongs to religious tradition. Thus, a current community role and a story from the life of a saint are distinct aspects.

Zakynthos, the wider travel destination, offers a variety of cultural perspectives. The Museum of Zakynthos displays works from the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons, and works of Ionian Naturalism dating from the 15th to the 19th century. On the ground floor of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians, the mausoleum has housed the remains of national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos since 1968. The collections and the mausoleum offer different ways of exploring the island’s cultural history.

Zakynthos’s landscapes also vary considerably. The Blue Caves are in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Lake Keri is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site, and a protected area within the Zakynthos National Marine Park. Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and the Myzithres rocks at sunset. When comparing these landscape attractions, Lake Keri’s protected status and the lighthouse’s sunset panoramas represent different highlights.

In Volimes, the Monastery of Agios Georgios sta Gremna was founded in 1535. Zakynthian Ladotyri cheese is also produced there in dairies and home workshops and offered as a local product. The port of Agios Nikolaos in Volimes is a sea access point and connects Zakynthos to Kefalonia by ferry. If you’re considering this connection in your plans, check the current timetable. The monastery, cheese production, and port each represent a different aspect of the area.
