Sfakera: Village Character and Róda Beach
Accommodation in Sfakera
Sfakera is a traditional village with old stone houses and cobbled streets. Róda Beach is about one kilometre from Sfakera.
Corfu as a wider setting: nature and activities
Corfu also offers regional points of reference for planning activities. Northern Corfu is suitable for hiking and long walks because of its geological landscape; there are also cycling routes and opportunities for mountain biking. In the municipal unit of Achilleion on Corfu, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking.
For a longer hiking route on Corfu, the 180-kilometre Corfu Trail is another point of reference. It passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 overnight stops. These details describe a route through several places and help position it as a standalone option within the broader destination.
Corfu Town: historic cityscape and museums
The Old Town of Corfu has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the two fortresses, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Corfu Town therefore offers a cultural focus that differs from the traditional village of Sfakera. In Corfu’s historic Old Town, Casa Parlante illustrates the daily life of the island’s nobility in the 19th century through moving figures and recreated furnishings and interiors.
A digital guide to Corfu’s Old Town offers residents and visitors information and high-quality audiovisual material about more than 80 sights within the city. Check whether the guide is available before your trip. The Museum of Asian Art is also in the Old Town and houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. From Corfu Port, the museum can be reached by bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route; check the timetable before travelling.
Archaeology and other cultural history on Corfu
The Archaeological Museum of Corfu was built primarily to display the Gorgoneion Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery. The Kapodistrias Museum focuses on a different period of history: its permanent exhibition explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor, using significant artefacts and documents. The lush garden on the hill by the museum offers views of Corfu’s landscape and across the island.
The Achilleion Summer Palace is also part of Corfu’s historic architecture: it was built in 1892 in the Pompeian style in Gastouri.
