Faskomilia: Ancient Traces and Regional History
Accommodation in Faskomilia
Faskomilia is mentioned as a place visitors can explore in the wider area around Syvota. Its historical associations include fortified settlements from the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods, as well as ancient wall remains. Polyneri offers a broader perspective on the surrounding area. Also included are an earlier account of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour and a childrenās activity from June 2025. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between local place references, regional history, and specific event dates.
Archaeological Traces
Fortified settlements existed in Faskomilia in both the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods. A report from 1971 places ancient wall remains on the northern slope of the Plataria valley, beneath the Tatsakis house. Whether these remains are the fort seen by Hammond is unknown. The report dates from 1971; the wall remains themselves are described as ancient. The settlements are assigned to two periods, while the wall remains are a separate find whose identity is uncertain.
Polyneri in the Wider Area
In the wider region, a 2004 study describes the ruins of an ancient settlement and its acropolis in Polyneri, as well as medieval walls and parts of the modern settlement that were visible at the time. The acropolis belongs to the ancient settlement; the medieval walls and parts of the modern settlement add further layers from other periods. Together, they create an impression of historical continuity. For comparison with Faskomilia, note that this multilayered description refers to Polyneri in the wider area.
Festival and Childrenās Activity
An earlier account reports that, at the time, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour was celebrated in Faskomilia every year on August 6 and attracted many worshippers and visitors. Traditional celebrations included music groups from Epirus, as well as folk exhibitions and village products. The music, exhibitions, and products give the described celebration a distinctive local character. If this event is important to your trip, check the current event dates before making plans.
A childrenās activity at Plataria Horse Riding took place in Faskomilia on June 18, 19, and 20, 2025. Participating children could ride, care for horses, and play. The event was organized by the Ā«ĪĻιάΓνη» Prevention Center of the Prefecture of Thesprotia; the invitation was addressed to primary school pupils aged six to twelve. The activity brought together three different pursuits in a clearly dated childrenās program. Its timeframe was limited compared with the festival: the childrenās activity took place over three days in June 2025, while the earlier festival account gives August 6 as the annual date.
