Discover Louros: River Landscape, Forest and History
Accommodation in Louros
Louros connects its ties to a river and a protected area with natural and historical attractions nearby. The town lies near the mouth of the river of the same name and not far from the coast of the Ionian Sea. Part of Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park lies within Louros. Nearby are Agios Varnavas Forest and its historic church; other natural destinations offer different activity options. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether you are especially interested in the forest and its history or in activities in the wider area.
Louros between a river mouth and a protected area
The mouth of the Louros River is a prominent geographic reference point for the town. The coast of the Ionian Sea is also nearby. Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park is another part of the regional landscape: part of the park lies within Louros. These connections between the town and its surroundings give the destination more than one main focus, while the protected area as a whole should not be considered part of the town.
Agios Varnavas Forest: trails and vegetation
Agios Varnavas Forest can be explored via marked trails through the vegetation. Water ash, alders, white willows, elms, plane trees and white poplars grow there. These tree species give a clear picture of the forest's vegetation: alongside alders and water ash, there are also several types of willow and poplar, as well as elms and plane trees. The forest is easily reached by car from the Preveza–Ioannina National Road.
A church with a Byzantine history
The historic Church of Agios Varnavas stands in a clearing in the middle of the forest. It was first founded in 1149, during the Byzantine era, and was later destroyed and rebuilt. This gives a visit to the forest a tangible historical connection. The church and the vegetation represent different aspects of the forest: on one hand, marked trails and tree species; on the other, a site with a history of foundation dating back to 1149.
Gorge and lake: different leisure options
The Louros River Gorge is a separate destination nearby. It lies on the border between the regional units of Preveza and Ioannina and is suitable for hiking and enjoying nature. The shared river name may link the gorge with the mouth near Louros, but they are distinct geographic features: the gorge lies on the regional border.
Lake Ziros, near the town of Filippiada, offers a wider range of leisure options: cycling, picnicking, hiking, relaxing and taking part in sports. By comparison, hiking and enjoying nature are the main activities at the gorge. By weighing your interests, you can distinguish between a focus on hiking and enjoying nature and the additional activities around the lake.
Viticulture in the wider region
The wider region also has agricultural ties: it is known for vineyards growing grape varieties used to produce wine and tsipouro.
Culture in the wider Preveza destination
The wider Preveza destination has its own historical highlights. The archaeological site of Nikopolis has a main route and six secondary routes connecting nine monumental areas. The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis presents the city's history spanning more than a thousand years through various aspects of its residents' private and public lives.
The historic city center of Preveza is also home to the Venetian Clock Tower, dating from 1752. Together, these destinations show how the cultural offerings in the wider destination differ from the natural and ecclesiastical history around Louros. The cultural sites of Nikopolis and the clock tower are associated with Preveza, while Agios Varnavas Forest and its church are central to the local natural and historical context around Louros.
