Kalendsion and its local history
Accommodation in Kalendsion
Kalendsion brings together several historical themes, reflected in its buildings and clearly dated details. Kaléntzi is home to a Hellenistic fortress and other buildings from the Hellenistic period, as well as churches, a parish monastery, the Radosta Bridge, and old watermills. This offers a view spanning from antiquity to buildings from later centuries.
Historic buildings
A Hellenistic fortress and other buildings from the Hellenistic period are part of Kaléntzi’s history. The Church of Faneromeni dates from 1787, and the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God from 1820—a difference of 33 years. The Radosta Bridge stands in the village square and was built around 1900.
East of the village, outside its limits, the Hellenistic fortification lies on Kastri Hill. Its southeastern tower survives to a height of up to 3.60 meters and was built using polygonal masonry. Large sections of the fortification wall collapsed into the gorge; other surviving sections are concealed by dense vegetation. In the 1990s, an unfortified settlement and a cemetery with grave steles were discovered on the western edge of the basin. These finds indicate that the area has been inhabited since the 3rd century BC.
Parish monastery: construction and renovation
An inscription above the entrance to the parish monastery records a renovation in 1620. The year refers to the renovation, not to the monastery’s original construction date. The monastery is built of irregular stones and roofed with stone slabs.
Old watermills
The old watermills are another distinct historical highlight. Koutsomylos and the Klifki Watermill are associated with Kaléntzi as old watermills. They complement the churches and monastery as a distinct type of historic building.
Elevation details on the route to the Klifki Springs
Another planning consideration is the elevation along the route from Kaléntzi to the Klifki Springs. The stated elevation is 590 m in Kaléntzi and 300 m at the springs. The difference between these reference points is 290 meters in elevation. The Klifki Springs are 290 meters lower than Kaléntzi; this difference refers to the two endpoints, not to individual sections of the route. The route description begins at the Rodami Hotel in the village. It gives a total distance of about 4.2 kilometers and a walking time of three and a half hours for the round trip. With vehicle support, the stated duration is one hour and 45 minutes. Paved road and unpaved path alternate. Check current trail conditions before setting out, and allow time for breaks according to your fitness level.
Trip planning and hotel search
If you’re looking for a hotel in Kalendsion, you can first decide whether historic buildings or the route to the Klifki Springs is the main focus of your trip. The dates, material details, and elevation figures offer different starting points for planning. This way, you can begin by considering what interests you at your destination, then choose a hotel based on the specific options available.
