Fragkades offers several specific points of interest if you are looking for a destination with historic buildings, a hike or astronomy activities. The sights differ not only in theme, but also in location and history. For your planning, it is also worth checking the seasonal conditions: they affect both the passability and waymarking of the hiking route, as well as the observatory’s public visiting dates.

Church, Monastery and Historic Buildings

The stone church of Agios Dimitrios dates back to 1779 and is one of the village’s sights. Its distinctive polygonal bell tower stands out for its many-sided shape. The building can therefore be identified not only by its age, but also by a striking architectural feature.

The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Fragkades lies below the village square and was founded in 1578. Today, only the katholikon—the main church of a monastery—remains. This sets it apart from a fully preserved monastery complex: the focus here is on the surviving place of worship. The monastery was founded before the church of Agios Dimitrios; the dates refer to different buildings and events.

The old Valleka watermill is also one of Fragkades’ sights. South of the village, at the site of Mýlos, stands the stone Petzionis Bridge. It is located above a tributary of the Zagoritikos and was built in 1830 with financial support from Th. Petsionis, after whom it was named. The bridge’s name thus also preserves its connection to its benefactor. Its date adds another chapter to the local history of construction, alongside the two older religious buildings.

Another place with historical significance is Palaiomonastiro: the ruins of an old monastery remain on a small hill southeast of Fragkades. Its location distinguishes this site from the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos below the village square. Visitors interested in historic buildings will find several different forms here: a village church with a distinctive bell tower, a monastery with a surviving katholikon, and the ruins of another monastery.

Hiking the Z23

The Z23 hiking trail leads from Fragkades to Petzionis Bridge and Dipotamo in about two hours. The walking time should be regarded as an estimate. The trail’s passability and waymarking vary depending on the season and route, so check the conditions for your planned travel period before setting out. The bridge is both a specific destination along the route and a historic point of interest in its own right. This lets you include both hiking and learning about the structure in your travel plans, without treating the approximate time as a fixed duration.

Night Sky and Educational Activities

The Zagori Observatory in Fragkades offers guided observations of the night sky. It is open to the public seasonally and on specific dates. Check the operator’s current schedule before visiting. The program also includes educational seminars for amateur astronomers, school pupils and students. Introductory courses are aimed at the general public. There are therefore different formats: the seminars are intended for specific educational and interest groups, while the introductory courses are open to a general audience. If you choose Fragkades for your stay, you can consider these activities as a separate focus alongside the historic sights and hiking.
