Athamanio lies among fir trees in the foothills of southern Tzoumerka. The village center is at an altitude of 700 meters; the mountain peak above the village reaches 2,393 meters. The village also features the Folklore Museum and a paved square. Three trails lead from Athamanio to Agios Ioannis, Agia Kyriaki and Pinakouli. When planning your trip, you can consider the landscape, everyday history and different trail destinations as separate points of interest.

Landscape and Village Square

The altitude figures refer to two different points: 700 meters is the elevation of the village center, while 2,393 meters is the elevation of the peak above the village. Together with the fir trees, they place Athamanio in the foothills of southern Tzoumerka. If you are interested in details of the village, the paved square has two large plane trees; one is described as being over a hundred years old.

Athamanio also has clear running waters and stone fountains. The stone fountains are described as drinking fountains. If you would like to drink from one, check on site whether the particular fountain is currently in operation and whether the water is suitable for drinking.

Folklore Museum and Everyday Life

The Folklore Museum of Athamanio is housed in a renovated former primary school building near the chapel of Agia Kyriaki. Its permanent exhibition offers insights into the everyday lives of villagers around 60 years ago. Exhibits include photographs, handmade wooden tools, household items, traditional clothing, handicrafts and textiles. The mix of images and objects offers different perspectives on everyday life. The renovated former school building also provides the architectural setting for the exhibition. If the museum is a firm part of your itinerary, check in advance whether it will be open during your visit.

Compare the Trails

The trail from Athamanio to Agios Ioannis is rated easy, the one to Agia Kyriaki moderately difficult, and the one to Pinakouli difficult. If you are choosing between the trails, their difficulty ratings provide a common basis for comparison. The trail list is no longer updated; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Watermills and a Summer Swimming Option

Agia Kyriaki has a watermill and a fulling mill, described as attractions in Athamanio and as fully operational. If you are planning to visit the mills, ask in advance about visiting arrangements and their current operating status.

A summer swimming option nearby is described as swimming at the beach on the Acheloos River in the Terpna area. The drive there from Athamanio is stated to take 15 minutes. Unlike the hiking trails, this option centers on the summer season and the stated driving time; the trails, by contrast, differ in difficulty. Check current conditions before driving there.
