Various points of interest in Pigi commemorate literature, individuals, and the fallen. Route 2 of the Arkadi guide also passes through the village, among other places. Together, these themes offer an introduction for anyone wishing to discover Pigi through its cultural heritage.

Cultural traces in Pigi

The home of the writer Pantelis Prevelakis is tucked among Pigi’s picturesque lanes. At the eastern entrance to the village stand busts of Abbot Dionysios Psaroudakis and the gendarme Nikolaos Giapintzakis, who was executed by the Germans. A monument in the village square commemorates those from Pigi and Agios Dimitrios who fell in the great battles of the 20th century. Literary remembrance, the commemoration of two named individuals, and the honoring of the fallen offer distinct points of focus.

Route 2 of the Arkadi guide passes through Pigi, among other places. If you plan to include this published route in your trip, check the latest route information beforehand. Northwest of Pigi, outside the village, lies Agios Nikolaos tou Nispita, a single-aisled Byzantine church dating from the 14th century. Remains of wall paintings have been preserved inside. This adds a distinct point of interest in Byzantine church art near the memorial sites in Pigi.

More cultural and landscape highlights in the wider Rethymno destination

In the wider Rethymno destination, the Old Town offers its own historical focus. It is designated a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later altered under Turkish rule; the historic city center lies below the Venetian Fortezza fortress. The Old Town’s protected status, urban development, and the location of its center in relation to the fortress can thus be considered as distinct aspects.

The museums also offer different areas of focus. Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the main entrance to the Fortezza. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum is housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion. Its permanent exhibition presents traditional crafts and folk art in five rooms. While the Archaeological Museum covers a long period of regional history, the Historical and Folklore Museum focuses on crafts and folk art.

Other historical sites in the wider Rethymno destination can also be found outside the Old Town. The Military Museum of Chromonastiri is housed in a Venetian villa built in 1610 for the Clodio family. One room is devoted to the Battle of Crete; the museum also displays weapons dating from the Greek Revolution of 1821 through to the Second World War. The Armeni necropolis is an extensive Late Minoan cemetery where more than 220 tombs have been excavated. These are family tombs containing several deceased individuals. Grave goods offer insights into the art, religion, and social organization of the period.

Religious buildings and their history are also part of Rethymno’s cultural landscape. The two-aisled Church of Saint Constantine and the Transfiguration of the Savior at Arkadi Monastery was built in 1587. Dating from the period of Venetian rule, it features elements of Renaissance architecture. After the Revolution of 1866–1869, the monastery became an everlasting symbol of freedom.

The coast of the Municipality of Rethymno offers another point of interest. Rethymno Beach is twelve kilometers long, beginning at the historic city center and stretching eastward to Scaleta. Its sand is fine-grained and light brown; the municipality’s coastline also includes the Venetian harbor. Rethymno also has traditional coffeehouses serving local specialties, and the area offers opportunities for diving.

Rethymno offers further options for seasonal culture: the Renaissance Festival takes place every summer, with music, theater, and dance performances as well as art exhibitions. A volunteer team organizes the annual parade for Carnival. If these events are relevant to your travel plans, check the latest dates.
