Prínos can be explored archaeologically through one clearly identified site: the Fantaxospiliara Cave. It is located on Koules Hill. The cave has yielded archaeological finds mainly from the Hellenistic period. Outside the cave, sherds of Late Minoan pottery were discovered. This brings two find contexts with different find locations and period designations into focus.

The Fantaxospiliara Cave and Its Finds

The find details offer different points of reference for understanding the site: the archaeological focus inside the cave is Hellenistic, while the pottery sherds discovered outside are Late Minoan. Any comparison therefore depends on both the find location and the period specified. The cave itself and its surrounding area are not described as a single findspot.

If you are planning to visit the cave, check in advance whether access is possible and under what conditions. This will allow you to include Prínos’s archaeological point of interest in your travel plans without assuming that a visit is necessarily possible.

Rethymno as the Wider Travel Destination

Beyond the cave finds, the wider travel destination of Rethymno offers its own cultural and historical perspective. Rethymno Old Town is designated as a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was altered during the later Turkish rule. The historic city center lies below the Venetian Fortezza fortress.

The museums in Rethymno also have different focuses. Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the main entrance to the Fortezza. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum is housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion. Five rooms of the permanent exhibition showcase traditional crafts and folk art.

The Venetian harbor is part of the coast of the municipality of Rethymno. Rethymno Beach is twelve kilometers long: it begins at the historic city center and extends eastward to Scaleta. Its sand is fine-grained and light brown. This information refers to Rethymno, not to the location of the Fantaxospiliara Cave in Prínos.

Rethymno also offers its own setting for planning a trip around events: the Renaissance Festival takes place every summer, with music, theater and dance performances as well as art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival is a traditional event featuring a parade organized each year by volunteers. Check the latest dates and programs for your travel dates.
