Panormos is a quiet coastal village whose character is shaped by its beaches and several historical themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Panormos, taking a closer look at the village can help you decide: its coastal setting is reflected in two developed beaches, while archaeological finds, traces of a castle and the history of the carob-processing Charoupomylos offer further points of interest. Panormos can thus be understood both through its coastline and through various aspects of its past.

Beaches of sand and pebbles

Panormos has two developed beaches: one sandy beach and one pebble beach. The different surfaces offer a concrete point of comparison when considering which type of beach you prefer. The central beach, also called Limni, is sandy and has an artificial stone breakwater that protects it from northerly winds. Choosing a coastal setting therefore involves two questions: Which beach surface do you prefer, and is the central beach with its breakwater important to your idea of a coastal village? Beach facilities may change. If their availability is important to your plans, check the current situation before your stay.

Archaeological traces at Limni

At the Limni site in Panormos, a rescue excavation uncovered parts of two buildings: one from the Hellenistic period and another from the Late Roman period. The building remains therefore belong to different historical periods. Fragments of mosaic floors have also been preserved at the site. One of the rooms was interpreted as a textile workshop; this interpretation was based on numerous textile weights, known as agnythes. The information thus links two buildings assigned to different periods with a cautiously worded interpretation of the room's use.

Castle and industrial history

Another historical point of interest is the castle of Mylopotamos. It was built on the coast, in the middle of the present-day settlement of Panormos; only traces of it remain today. This makes the castle distinct from the finds at Limni: the focus here is on its location within the present-day settlement and the traces that remain.

Charoupomylos is also part of the village's cultural history. This abandoned and dilapidated industrial building, used for processing carob, provided the impetus for creating an arts and cultural venue in Panormos. The Greek Ministry of Culture declared Charoupomylos an industrial monument. This offers a different historical perspective from the archaeological finds: one focused on former industrial use and the inspiration to create a cultural venue.

When choosing your destination, you can weigh whether the type of beach or the historical points of interest matter more to your stay. This is one way to think of Panormos as a coastal village with different connections to history.
