Kalo Chorio combines the coast, an evergreen valley and fertile hills with a long history of settlement. Its attractions range from water sports on the beaches to archaeological remains at Priniatikos Pyrgos and in the surrounding area. This creates a clear contrast when planning your trip: would you like to focus your stay mainly on beach activities, or are you more interested in the succession of settlement periods? The Peza climbing area is another distinct highlight.

Four settlements between the valley and the coast

Arnikos, Pyrgos, Istron and Forti now form Kalo Chorio together. The settlements are scattered throughout the evergreen valley, along the beach and in the surrounding fertile hills. Kalo Chorio thus comprises several settlements in different landscapes. This is relevant when choosing it as a travel destination: the character of the area is shaped not only by its connection to the beach, but also by its valley and hills.

Three beaches for water sports

Voulisma, Agios Panteleimonas and Karavostasi are three beaches in Kalo Chorio that are well suited to stand-up paddleboarding, surfing and windsurfing thanks to their size. Their suitability connects the coast with specific activity options. If you are considering Kalo Chorio for a hotel stay, you can start by asking yourself what matters most: water sports on the beach or the archaeological past? This comparison can help you decide which interests to prioritize when planning your trip.

Priniatikos Pyrgos through the ages

Priniatikos Pyrgos was continuously inhabited from the Late Neolithic and Early Minoan periods I and II through to the Late Minoan period I. Its settlement history therefore spans several early prehistoric and Minoan periods. The Roman period, from the 1st to the 7th century, was an important phase for Priniatikos Pyrgos; buildings from this era have been excavated there. Another phase of settlement began in the 13th century and continued through the Venetian and Ottoman periods. For history enthusiasts, this succession of periods is particularly interesting: early settlement, Roman buildings and a later phase are chapters in the history of the same place. Priniatikos Pyrgos offers a broad perspective across time, while Vrokastro, as a Late Minoan settlement, is more closely associated with a single period.

Vrokastro and Peza in the surrounding area

In the surrounding area of Kalo Chorio, the ruins of the Late Minoan settlement of Vrokastro lie on the summit of a steep slope. Its steep hillside setting is part of its landscape, while its Late Minoan classification defines its historical focus. The Peza climbing area is a few minutes from Kalo Chorio and features four crags, as well as many routes for beginners and experienced climbers. Vrokastro and Peza represent two different interests: Late Minoan settlement history on the one hand, and climbing on the other. If you would like to consider destinations beyond the beaches, you can plan your trip around either an archaeological or a sporting focus.
