Ferma: Beach, Things to Do and Roman Fish Farm
Accommodation in Ferma
Ferma can be explored through three distinct features: the pebble beach with deep, very clear water; trails and a waterfall in the nearby area; and a Roman fish farm near Ferma. For planning your trip, the beach, things to do and history each offer a different focus. Checking the starting point and the type of information provided can help you avoid confusing the destinations.
Ferma Beach
Ferma Beach has fine pebbles and deep, very clear water, but it is not organized. These are separate characteristics: the pebbles and water depth describe the beach itself, while its organizational status is a practical consideration when choosing a beach. If an organized beach is one of your criteria, take this into account when planning. This lets you assess the beach based on its characteristics without automatically equating clear water with organized beach facilities.
Trails and a waterfall nearby
A visitor guide from 2024 describes a popular, easy hiking trail that starts at Kaki Skala Beach near Ferma. The starting point is therefore Kaki Skala, not Ferma Beach; bear this distinction in mind if you plan to take the trail as an excursion. The 20-meter-high Milona Waterfall is also nearby. The ascent takes about 20 minutes; this approximate time may vary depending on conditions and refers to the ascent. The two destinations can be compared using different planning criteria: for the hiking trail, the starting point and easy rating are relevant; for the waterfall, its height and approximate ascent time. These are different measures that should not be treated as equivalent when planning.
Roman fish farm
Near Ferma, there is a Roman fish farm carved into the rock. It combines a rock-cut structure with Roman fish farming, adding a historical focus to the natural attractions. If you are interested in Roman traces and historical structures, the site offers a distinct point of interest in Ferma. So, alongside the beach and hiking trail, the history of fish farming is also part of the picture of the area.
Distances and finding a hotel
Ferma Beach and the town of the same name are about 10 km from Ierapetra and about 45 km from Agios Nikolaos. These are approximate distances and apply to both the beach and the town; they do not indicate travel time. Ierapetra is the closer reference point, while Agios Nikolaos is farther away. Use the distances for geographical orientation, not as an estimate of the time needed for a specific trip. For that, take your planned route into account.
Some hotels and tavernas are very close to the beach. You can also consider the hiking trail, waterfall and Roman site as separate interests when planning your stay.
