Sani: Beach, Wetlands and History
Accommodation in Sani
Sani is the first settlement in the western part of the Kassandra peninsula, beyond the Nea Potidea Canal. If you are looking for a hotel in Sani, you can understand the destination through three themes: coast, birdwatching and history. These highlights can help you decide which landscapes and interests you want to shape your stay.
Coast and Beach
The sand at Sani Beach is very light and fine, and slopes into shallow water. A Byzantine tower overlooks the beach. Nearby, Megali Kipsa Beach lies between Sani and Siviri; deep blue waters and distinctive natural surroundings shape its coastal scenery. This gives you two specific features to consider when choosing a beach: the light, fine sand and shallow water at Sani, or the deep blue waters and natural scenery at Megali Kipsa.
Wetlands and Birdwatching
The Sani wetland covers 1,100 stremmata and is home to more than 200 bird species, including many endangered species. The number of species may change over time. Sani’s wetlands are among the best places in the region for birdwatching. If birdwatching is part of your stay, Sani offers a specific nature-focused experience. Nearby, the N. Fokea wetland is also protected under the Ramsar Convention. It provides habitat for hundreds of bird species every year and adds another wetland to the region’s points of interest.
Routes and Scenery
An easy circular trail leads from Sani to the bird sanctuary and back through the surrounding forest and wetland. A longer coastal route starts in Sani and heads towards Siviri, offering views of hidden coves, wooded slopes and steep coastlines. The routes differ in their layout and scenery: the circular trail loops back through natural areas, while the longer route follows the coastline towards Siviri. Check the current condition of the circular trail before setting out.
History on Sani Hill
Stavronikita Tower stands on Sani Hill. It was built as a fortification in the late 14th or early 15th century to protect the metochion of Mount Athos’ Stavronikita Monastery. The metochion was founded around the existing tower in 1543. The dates therefore refer to two different events: the earlier date is when the tower was built, while 1543 marks the founding of the metochion. Every summer, the Sani Festival takes place on Sani Hill around the tower. If you want to plan your stay around the event, check the dates for your travel year.
