Nea Potidea combines a striking canal with ancient history and varied coastal areas. Along the canal, the present-day townscape meets the history of Potidea and Cassandreia; beaches and coastal parks offer further options for your stay.

The canal and the town’s ancient history

The Nea Potidea Canal is 1,250 metres long and 40 metres wide. It was built to facilitate shipping and protect the ancient city of Cassandreia, which the Macedonian king had constructed on the site of ancient Potidea. On a walk, you can stroll along the canal through Néa Potídhaia and see the ancient city’s fortification wall right beside it. This brings the fortified city into view alongside the canal’s engineering. With a ratio of just over 31 to 1, the canal is more than thirty times as long as it is wide. This makes its elongated shape easy to appreciate.

Ancient remains in the surrounding area

Ancient Potidea was one of the region’s most important port cities because of its strategic location on the Kassandra isthmus. The canal and the port city illustrate different aspects of the ancient landscape: the canal highlights shipping and the protection of Cassandreia, while Potidea’s significance lies in its strategic position as a port city. The Macedonian Tomb of Potidaea is located near Nea Potidea. It was discovered in 1961 and dates to approximately the 4th century BC; it represents one of the final phases of the Macedonian dynasty. Finds from the tomb include pottery, jewellery and weapons.

Beaches with different features

There are two coastal areas with different features to choose from for time by the water. The main section of Néa Potídhaia’s eastern beach lies south of the canal and has beach bars and a water park. The eastern beach has also been awarded Blue Flag status. Before travelling, check whether the beach bars and water park are available and whether the award is still current. Nearby Portes Beach has a sandy shore with golden sand and clear turquoise water. Trees provide natural shade there. The beach is suitable for swimming and sunbathing. The eastern section stands out for its beach bars and water park, while Portes Beach is known for its sandy shore, clear water and natural shade from trees.

Coastal parks for walks

Néa Potídhaia has two large coastal parks on either side of the isthmus. You can walk among the greenery there. The parks offer a distinct option for outdoor walks, while Portes Beach is suitable for swimming and sunbathing.
