Áfitos: Views, history and summer life
Accommodation in Áfitos
When choosing Áfitos as a destination, several features can help guide you: a named viewpoint, historic buildings, traces of stone quarrying and summer events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Áfitos, you can match these features to your interests for your stay.
Landscape and townscape
From the viewpoint known as The Rock, you can look out over the Toronean Gulf and the peninsulas of Sithonia and Kassandra. Another landmark is a rock reached by climbing and known as the “Balcony of Áfitos.” These names and viewpoints give you specific points of reference if you’re interested in the landscape around the town.
The townscape features paved streets and narrow lanes. Stone houses dating from the 19th century are regarded as mansions; some also bear wooden inscriptions. The townscape brings together different details: the layout of the streets, the stone construction and the inscriptions on individual houses. Áfitos has a history spanning at least 5,000 years.
Church, museum and quarry
The Church of St. Demetrios was built in 1858 over the ruins of an older church dedicated to the same saint. The church also houses an icon of the Virgin Mary of Afitos, created in Constantinople in the 14th century. The construction date and the icon point to different periods in the town’s history: the church dates from the 19th century, while the artwork is much older and has its own stated provenance.
The Aletras Building Folklore Museum displays agricultural tools in the basement and a traditional house on the first floor. The collection thus brings together agricultural objects and a depiction of a traditional house. If you’re interested in daily life and architectural styles, you’ll find two distinct themes within one building.
The ancient Moudounou quarry lies on the eastern edge of Áfytos. Traces of quarrying large rectangular blocks can be seen in the rock. These visible marks of quarrying give the site a different character from the church and house architecture: here, the defining feature is the excavation of the rock itself.
Summer events and the beach
During the summer months, residents of Áfitos organise festivals and celebrations. Numerous events featuring street musicians are also listed for the summer. If specific dates matter for your trip, check the event dates for your preferred period before booking.
At Áfitos Beach, there are areas with sun loungers and bars serving food or drinks. If you’d like to include these amenities in your plans, check what’s available for your travel dates before visiting. This way, you can base your choice of stay on the specific amenities that matter for your trip.
