In Chalkidiki, you can tailor your visit to nature trails, coastal landscapes and ancient sites according to your interests. Options range from a short loop around Lake Mavrobara near Polychrono to an approximately 20-kilometre hiking route between Sani and Siviri.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The loop around Lake Mavrobara near Polychrono is short and suitable for families. The lake is a refuge for three rare species of aquatic turtles. The trail thus combines a manageable hike with a natural habitat where these animals live.

The hiking route from Sani to Siviri is different: it is about 20 kilometres long and passes through dense forests. The approximate distance helps you estimate how much time to allow; check local trail conditions before setting out. When visiting ancient Stagira, the coastal path can also be part of your visit.

The Agios Mamas Lagoon is a habitat for pink flamingos and protected bird species. Glarokavos Lagoon offers a different landscape: it is a natural harbour with a sandy beach, and the surrounding pine trees provide dense shade. Mount Holomontas defines central and northern Chalkidiki and reaches an elevation of 1,165 metres. Together, these places showcase different natural settings – from wetlands and coastline to mountain country.

Water Sports and Regional Routes

Canoeing is available at almost all organised beaches in Chalkidiki. Organised sports centres also offer water-skiing and windsurfing lessons. Specific providers and conditions may vary. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check the details in advance.

Cycling and the wine route offer other ways to explore: in eastern Chalkidiki, dozens of signposted and mapped cycling routes pass through mountain and coastal areas. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before setting out. The Chalkidiki Wine Route is part of the Wine Roads of Northern Greece; access to individual wineries may vary.

Ancient Sites and What Makes Them Special

Aristotle’s Grove features interactive experimental devices based on the laws of nature described in Aristotle’s work “Physics.” The site offers a way to explore topics in natural philosophy through hands-on devices. In Olynthos, on the coast of the Toronean Gulf, you can find some of the oldest known figurative mosaic floors in the ancient Greek world.

Ancient Stagira also combines an archaeological visit with a coastal path. The site has added historical significance within the wider destination of Chalkidiki: Stagira was the birthplace of the philosopher Aristotle (384 BC–322 BC) and was founded in 655 BC as a colony of Andros. After his death, his fellow citizens brought his body to Stagira, where he was buried with great honours. Aristotle was declared the city’s “founder,” and an altar was erected on his tomb.

Olynthos can also be placed in historical context: Ancient Olynthos was the most important city in Halkidiki for 100 years. In Chalkidiki, the wine route is part of the Wine Roads of Northern Greece – another cultural highlight alongside the archaeological sites.

The Wider Region: Chalkidiki

As a broader destination, Chalkidiki offers a regional perspective beyond the individual sites. Its coastline stretches for about 550 kilometres and includes around 1,000 different beaches. Ammouliani is the only permanently inhabited island in Halkidiki. These details describe the Chalkidiki region and should be distinguished from the particular features of individual places such as Polychrono, Glarokavos or Stagira.

The Cave of Petralona lies in western Halkidiki. It is an archaeological site open to visitors and a museum, and is known for human and other fossils from the Pleistocene. Check the current operating details before your visit. This adds another historical and archaeological highlight to the regional picture of Chalkidiki.
