Mariolata: Basilica, Ancient Walls and Paths to the Lecanes
Accommodation in Mariolata
Mariolata combines early Christian architecture, traces of the ancient city of “Βοιόν” and natural attractions with different route details. In the town, the basilica and the Old Village offer different ways to explore the area; the Lecanes and Baroutospilia draw attention to rock, water and landscape. A monastery nearby adds another historical destination. You can shape your stay around a town walk, cultural heritage or hiking destinations.
Basilica and Ancient Fortifications
The early Christian basilica in Mariolata is a three-aisled church with a transept and narthex. Part of the mosaic floor in the central nave has been preserved along the colonnades. The floor plan and floor mosaic give the church its distinctive architectural character. Access is limited to the area around the basilica. When arriving from the direction of Livadeia, the road to the left of the central square leads to the church after about 150 metres. Check local conditions before setting out.
The so-called Pelasgian Walls are located on Agios Athanasios Hill. They formed part of the fortifications of the acropolis of the ancient city of “Βοιόν”. Mariolata thus brings together different historical associations: the fortifications of an ancient acropolis and early Christian church architecture. For history enthusiasts, the hill adds traces of the ancient city to the view of the basilica.
A Walk Through the Old Village and Local Traditions
A walk through Mariolata’s Old Village takes you past picturesque lanes and buildings. Along the way, you will also find a square, an old well and the church “Η Γέννηση της Θεοτόκου”. The walk adds a route through the Old Village to the opportunity to visit individual buildings. Check current access conditions locally before your walk.
On 12 July 2025, the “ΒΟΙΟΝ” Women’s Association held its traditional cake festival in Mariolata’s square. The festival began in 2003 and is dedicated to preserving local folklore, culinary customs and folk traditions, including traditional songs and dances. Alongside the buildings, the festival therefore highlights community traditions and regional customs.
Lecanes and Baroutospilia: Routes to Natural Attractions
The Lecanes of Mariolata are intricately shaped hollows in the rock, formed over centuries by melting ice and snow, and containing clear, cold water. From the village bridge, a path follows the river uphill towards its sources; after about 2.5 kilometres, you reach the Lecanes. This destination combines a distinctive rock formation with a specific route along the river.
A hiking trail leads to Baroutospilia. It is considered easy and clearly marked, and the walk takes about an hour. There is a view towards the plain. The cave is considered one of the largest in Greece. For this excursion, the walking time, cave and landscape views are the highlights, while the route to the Lecanes offers a different focus: its approximate distance and rock hollows.
For planning, the two routes offer different points of reference: for the Lecanes, the approximate distance of 2.5 kilometres; for Baroutospilia, a walking time of about one hour. Consider these details separately and check local trail conditions before setting out.
