Kastriotissa: Museum, Hiking Route and Village Square
Accommodation in Kastriotissa
Culture and trails in Kastriotissa
Kastriotissa offers three different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the folk collection at the Folklore Museum of Kastriotissa, the route from Kastriótissa to Katavothra, and the Pournara on the village square. They appeal to different interests. The museum focuses on objects on display, the route on its course and landscape features, and the village square on a single tree. You can choose the focus that matters most to your travel plans.
Folklore Museum of Kastriotissa
More than 1,000 folk objects are on display at the Folklore Museum of Kastriotissa. These include traditional costumes, items from pastoral and rural life, and household objects. The collection also includes woodcarvings, embroidery and textiles, old photographs, documents, and commemorative medals.
The variety offers several ways to explore the collection by theme. Costumes, embroidery, and textiles can be considered together as clothing and textile crafts; items from pastoral and rural life, along with household objects, offer insights into rural and domestic life. Woodcarvings add a perspective on craftsmanship. Old photographs and documents bring in visual and written materials, while commemorative medals form a distinct group. Both the size of the collection and the types of exhibits are therefore relevant when assessing it. The more than 1,000 objects are more than just a figure: their different groups provide specific thematic ways in, such as textiles, everyday objects, crafts, or visual and written materials.
Route to Katavothra
The route from Kastriótissa to Katavothra runs mostly through forest and almost entirely along paths. It passes clearings, gorges, and springs. It is also continuously and, in some places, densely marked. Check the current condition of the trail and its markings before your hike. Unlike the museum, the focus here is on the route and landscape features rather than groups of objects. Forest defines most of the route; the paths, clearings, gorges, and springs offer further specific points of reference for understanding it.
The regional themed trail
In the wider region, the Kastriótissa–Katavothra section forms part of the themed trail “Μονοπάτι της Εθνική Αντίστασης” (“National Resistance Trail”). The longer trail begins at Spilia Mayer above Stromi and ends at Gorgopotamos. These are the endpoints of the wider themed trail; the Kastriótissa–Katavothra section is distinct from it. This clarification helps you avoid confusing the named trail section with the entire themed trail.
Pournara on the village square
The Pournara stands on the village square in Kastriótissa. In a 2012 announcement, the regional administration described the Pournara as centuries old. As a single tree, the Pournara is distinct from the extensive museum collection.
