Discover Delphi
Accommodation in Delphi
The site is 400 metres from the present-day village of Delphi, on the road between Arachova, Amfissa and Itea. This allows you to consider Delphi as a place to stay and the archaeological site as a separate point of reference when planning your trip. The named places and their historical connections can help you plan your stay around your cultural interests.
Ancient sanctuaries in their geographical context
In the wider area around the archaeological site, the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia lies to the south and the Sanctuary of Apollo to the north. A modern road separates the two ancient sanctuaries. The compass directions and road therefore provide clear reference points for understanding the locations in relation to each other. Two layers of time also meet here: the sanctuaries are ancient, while the road dividing them is modern.
The path, the oracle and the Pythian Games
The Sacred Way ends at the Temple of Apollo; in antiquity, the Oracle of Delphi was located inside this temple. The end of the path and the site of the oracle can therefore be understood in relation to a shared reference point.
The Pythian Games were held every four years in the theatre and stadium at the archaeological site. The four-year cycle and the two venues answer different questions about the history of the Games: when they returned and where they were held. Alongside the Temple of Apollo, the theatre and stadium thus stand out as distinct locations within the ancient site. The Games add another cultural dimension to the history associated with the oracle and the sanctuaries.
Museum and visit planning
The Delphi Archaeological Museum is fully accessible to people with physical disabilities. A lift provides access to the permanent exhibition, and there is also a specially designed, unobstructed route through it. Accessibility therefore covers both access to the exhibition and a suitably designed route through it. As facilities may change, please confirm the arrangements before your visit.
A special vehicle is available in the wider Delphi area for people with mobility impairments to visit the archaeological site as far as the Temple of Apollo. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Phocis must be notified at least seven days in advance. If you plan to use this option, confirm availability before your trip and allow for the required notice period.
A later cultural point of reference
Another point of reference in time is the Museum of the Delphic Festivals. It was built on the western heights of the city at the time of the first Delphic Festivals (1920).
To put the destination in context, the themes can be distinguished by time and place: the sanctuaries and oracle locate ancient history, the theatre and stadium the Pythian Games, while the Festival Museum offers a later historical reference point. This lets you plan your stay around particular themes without conflating the different layers of cultural history.
