Discover Fourna: Church Art and River History
Accommodation in Fourna
If, when choosing a hotel destination, you want to consider the character of the place as well as its accommodation, Fourna offers several concrete points of interest: religious art, the former Zoodochos Pigi Monastery, folklore collections, and the local river formation. The subjects range from Dionysios as an icon painter to the confluence of three streams. This allows you to tailor your search for hotels in Fourna to your interests in history, collections, or geography.
Church Art in the Village Center
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, also called the Cathedral of Christ the Transfigured, stands on the paved village square in the center of Fourna. The cathedral preserves icons from Zoodochos Pigi Monastery, including four surviving icons, as well as reliquaries containing relics of saints and numerous other religious works of art. The church museum also houses icons by Dionysios of Fourna. The collection thus brings together sacred objects, the history of the monastery, and the icon painter who came from the village. Its location on the village square also provides a clear landmark in Fourna.
Dionysios and Zoodochos Pigi Monastery
Dionysios of Fourna was a hieromonk, historian, and icon painter. A hieromonk is a monk who has been ordained as a priest. In 1734, he founded Zoodochos Pigi Monastery. The “School of Letters and Painting” operated at the monastery: a school of icon painting and writing that Dionysios also founded in 1734 and where prominent figures studied. Writing and icon painting give this historic place of learning two distinct areas of focus. In 1906, the monastery collapsed as a result of a landslide.
Folklore Museum and Everyday Objects
The Folklore Museum of the Fourna Women’s Association displays handicrafts, trousseau items, household utensils, and tools. Handicrafts and trousseau items reflect textile and domestic themes; household utensils and tools broaden the view to include practical objects from everyday life. This focus on folklore differs from sacred art and offers another way to explore the village’s history. If you plan to visit the museum, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Waterways and Historic Landmarks
In Fourna, the Aforismena, Mavromytis, and Paliotournos streams converge to form the Fourniotikos River. This relationship is clearly defined by the three named streams and the river they form. Another landmark near the village is the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, which dates to 1959. The name also appears in the name of the monastery founded by Dionysios. The dates help distinguish these two landmarks: the monastery was founded in 1734 and collapsed in 1906 as a result of a landslide, while the nearby church dates to 1959. The Church of Zoodochos Pigi is not the village-square church with the church museum.
