Kymi offers several ways to explore the town and its surroundings. The narrow streets bring architectural details to the fore, while the churches and folklore museum open up cultural and historical themes. Nearby, a monastery, castle ruins and the Vyros Trail add to the range of options. This makes it possible to distinguish between architectural, cultural and natural interests when planning your trip.

Architecture and Folklore Museum

On a walk through Kymi’s narrow streets, you can take in the distinctive architecture and the decorative details on houses, walls, tiled roofs, doors, windows and balconies. If you are interested in architectural styles, you can focus on the many different details in the townscape.

Kymi’s Folklore Museum is housed in a neoclassical building. Its cultural programming includes lectures, seminars, art exhibitions and educational programs. The museum thus combines a particular architectural style with a range of cultural events. If you plan to attend a specific lecture or program, check the date in advance.

Churches and Their Works of Art

Agios Athanasios is Kymi’s metropolitan church and stands in the town square. The church houses a 14th-century epitaph, which was a central exhibit during the 1985 events marking Athens as European Capital of Culture. The epitaph can therefore be understood both in terms of its date and its role in this cultural event.

The Panagia Liaoutsanissa in Kymi has a marble iconostasis and a marble pulpit. Both works were created by the sculptor Ioannis Chalepas. Visitors interested in religious art will find a different focus here than at Agios Athanasios: at Panagia Liaoutsanissa, the emphasis is on the material and the artist, while at Agios Athanasios it is on the epitaph and its historical significance.

Monastery, Castle and Vyros Trail

The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior lies five kilometers north of Kymi and was built in 1643. The ruins of Agios Georgios Castle are on a hill north of the monastery, and several sections of the castle wall remain. This historical site thus includes both a precisely dated building and the castle’s location in relation to the monastery.

As a hiking option in the surrounding area, the approximately three-kilometer Vyros Trail runs through the Vyros Gorge from the village of Petries to Stomio Beach. Petries is the trailhead, so take this into account when planning. The trail offers a separate way to add a hike to your stay.

Silk Processing and Healing Spring

A women’s silk producers’ cooperative operates in Kymi, processing silkworm cocoons and making traditional picture frames from cocoons. This craft offers a distinct focus alongside architecture and religious art: the emphasis is on a specific raw material and a product made from it.

The Choneftiko healing spring in Kymi was recognized for its healing properties and classified as a healing spring of local significance.
