Otepää Nature Park covers 222 square kilometres of the Otepää Uplands. Its highest peak is Kuutsemägi, at 218 metres. At the heart of the park lies Pühajärv, covering 290.7 hectares, with its curving shoreline and four islands shaping the landscape. Nature, water and trails offer different ways to focus your trip—from a hike to an outing by the lake.

Hiking trails for different time budgets

The Murrumetsa Hiking Trail is 3.5 kilometres long and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The Apteekrimägi Forest Trail is 4 kilometres long and is estimated to take about an hour. So the shorter trail is not automatically the one with the shorter stated duration—a useful distinction when planning your hiking time. The 15-kilometre Kekkose Hiking Trail is suitable for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, jogging and fitness walking. This gives you a choice of both shorter routes and a longer trail with several suggested activities.

The Pühajärve–Kääriku Trail is 11 kilometres long and is groomed as an 8.5-kilometre ski trail in winter. There is also a guided kick-sled tour for winter walks around Pühajärv: it lasts 2 to 4 hours and covers about 7 kilometres of winter trails. As route details and arrangements for the winter trail may change, it's worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Pühajärv in different seasons

During the summer season, Pühajärve Beach offers clean sand, a swimming jetty and a large outdoor swimming area. SUP boards, rowboats, canoes and pedal boats are also available to rent there in summer. These activities are seasonal, so check what's available for your travel dates. There is also a connection with the water in the cooler months: the beach has a winter swimming pool. The surrounding Pühajärve Park offers shady walking paths.

History and sports in Otepää

Otepää is linked to the history of the Estonian flag: in 1884, the first blue-black-white tricolour was consecrated there as the flag of the Estonian Students' Society. The Otepää Hill Fort preserves the ruins of a stone fortress founded by Bishop Herman in 1224. Europe's oldest known firearm was also found there. Those interested in church art and music history can find a Neo-Gothic altarpiece titled “Christ on the Cross,” dating from 1880, and a Kessler organ from 1853 in Otepää St Mary's Lutheran Church. The church doors are open to everyone in summer; check current access arrangements before your visit.

The Otepää Winter Sports Museum is located at the Tehvandi Sports Center. The Tehvandi and Kääriku sports centres offer year-round training and competition opportunities for winter and summer sports. There are also a range of outdoor activities: Otepää Adventure Park has high-ropes courses, a 350-metre zipline ride over the fortress valley and a catapult attraction that launches visitors up to 20 metres into the air. A professional team supervises the children's course. Seasonal opening hours may change, so check the dates before you visit.

More activities and viewpoints

At the foot of Väike Munamägi, Munaka Bike & Hike Park has a chairlift and rents out specialised enduro bikes. A cycling path has been completed on the Otepää–Kääriku route. For views of the landscape from above, there are two notable viewpoints: the platform at the Tehvandi ski jump is 34 metres high and can be reached by stairs or lift. The Harimäe Observation Tower is 28 metres tall, with its highest viewing platform at 24 metres. From there, the view extends over the Otepää hills, the Väike-Emajõgi Valley and the Karula Uplands.

Osaühing Loodusturism offers guided outdoor excursions in Otepää, including trips by canoe, kayak, kick-sled and snowshoe. RoheValge OÜ offers a different kind of hands-on experience: its introductory blacksmithing course lasts 7 or 13 hours and is available by prior arrangement. For both activities, checking the arrangements and conditions is a good starting point when adding them to your itinerary.

Local produce and travel planning

A visit to Murimäe Winery includes a tour of the vineyard and winery. An introductory course there also teaches you how to make wine from various ingredients. The Otepää Farmers’ Market Shop sells food and handicrafts from local producers. At Sangaste Rukki Restaurant, dishes are prepared with Sangaste rye flour, milled at Loona Farm's mill in Võrumaa. These experiences add a culinary and craft element to your plans, alongside nature and sport.

If you're looking for hotels in Otepää Parish, start by choosing the focus of your trip: hiking trails and outdoor activities, Pühajärv in summer or winter, sports, or historic sights. You can then tailor your search to what you'd like to experience while you're there.
