Meegaste combines a clear settlement history with rolling surroundings and winter activities. Meegaste Farm, the Tartu Marathon course and trails in Otepää Nature Park each represent a different side of this destination.

From Meegaste Farm to the settlement

Meegaste Farm was established in the mid-19th century, when farmland on former manor estates was divided. Around 1920, Meegaste was divided into smaller settler farm plots; after that, the place began to be regarded as a village. So this involved more than a new name: the division of the land came before the village’s later development. A map from 1906 shows large buildings. They suggest that Meegaste may have been managed like a manor farm. Specific milestones in the settlement’s history thus sit alongside a cautious interpretation of its earlier use.

Cross-country skiing and winter sports

The description of the Tartu Marathon course published in February 2024 mentions 63 kilometres of cross-country ski trail, open for use throughout the winter. Maintenance and access can vary by season; check current conditions before planning a specific outing. In a 2024 route description, Meegaste Hill follows the Kuutse–Peebu section; the exact route may change. Meegaste Hill is 214 metres high and is one of the highest peaks in the Otepää uplands. The Tartu Marathon course runs 100 metres from Meegaste Tourist Farm. In winter, the farm has its own ski slope; check its condition and operating status before travelling. Kuutsemägi is five kilometres from the farm and is home to Estonia’s largest alpine ski centre. These are distinct winter-sports options: cross-country skiing on the marathon trail, the farm’s ski slope and alpine skiing at Kuutsemägi.

Rolling hills and activities in the nature park

The area around Meegaste is characterised by a rolling landscape. Meegaste Tourist Farm is located in the heart of Otepää Nature Park; from Meegaste, you can explore trails in the park for leisurely walks or sporting challenges. As route conditions can vary by season, it is a good idea to check the latest conditions before heading out. Cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing are possible near the Tartu Marathon course by the farm. Päästjärv is also in Otepää Nature Park; the natural lake is open to the public and is located in Meegaste küla. The farm grounds also have a nine-hole disc golf course. Confirm its availability with the farm in advance.
