If you are planning a trip to Laiksaare, forest and trail themes offer practical guidance. The nature trail combines knowledge about nature with an activity along the way; at Lake Rae, a hiking path runs along the shore. The trails described have different focal points and can be assessed according to your interests and the distance you want to cover.

Forest themes on the nature trail

The Laiksaare nature trail introduces “lammimets,” a rare forest type in Estonia: a floodplain forest in valleys subject to flooding. Along the trail, visitors can see plant communities characteristic of these floodplain forests. So the trail is about more than naming a forest type: the vegetation characteristic of this habitat is also one of its themes.

Another activity along the way is the smartphone game “Laiksaare metsaseiklus,” which has 33 questions. It combines a visit to the nature trail with a series of questions to explore and think about. Visitors who choose the trail will also encounter specific obstacles: they must cross footbridges and fallen trees. These trail features are worth considering when planning, along with the forest theme.

Hiking trails and their different scales

On the 74-kilometre Kopra–Ikla section of the RMK Hiking Route, the Laiksaare nature trail is the next attraction after the area around Lake Rae. The trail is thus part of the sequence of attractions along this long route section. Conditions on a hiking route can change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

The hiking path at Lake Rae is 2.6 kilometres long and runs along the lake shore. There is a chance to spot traces of local forest animals along this path; whether they can be seen depends on natural conditions. There is also a life-size bear model there. The installation may be changed or removed. The path’s length and route may also change if it is modified.

The trails can be distinguished by their themes: the nature trail focuses on forest types, plant communities and the smartphone game, while the Lake Rae path features the lakeshore route and possible animal tracks. According to the stated lengths, the 2.6-kilometre path at Lake Rae is considerably shorter than the 74-kilometre Kopra–Ikla section. This comparison helps you consider distance and nature themes separately when planning.

Laiksaare looduskaitseala Nature Reserve

Laiksaare looduskaitseala Nature Reserve protects old-growth natural forests, old deciduous forests, herb-rich spruce forests, and swamp and swampy deciduous forests. The different categories show the range of protected forest and wet forest types. The reserve covers 401.3 hectares of land and extends into the villages of Nepste and Laiksaare, among others.

This offers nature-minded travellers two useful perspectives: the nature trail presents a specific forest theme and crosses footbridges and fallen trees; information about the nature reserve provides an overview of protected forest types and the recorded land area. Together with the lakeside path at Lake Rae, these offer a range of nature themes to choose from according to personal interests and the desired distance.
