Discover Kunda: Cultural History and Views
Accommodation in Kunda
Kunda offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: the history of cement production, striking architecture, sweeping views over Kunda Bay, and places along the river and at the beach. If you are looking for a hotel in Kunda, you can plan your stay around what matters most to you: historical themes, a view, or seasonal beach activities.
Traces of Cement History
The history of cement production in Kunda dates back to 1870. That year, manor owner John Carl Girard de Soucanton and chemist Viktor Christoph Lieven began producing cement. Their different roles and names mark the beginnings of the local industrial history.
On September 4, 2008, the building housing the Kunda Cement Museum was entered in the state register of Estonian cultural monuments as an architectural monument. The museum also houses the Kunda Tourism Information Point, at Jaama tänav 11.
A hydroelectric power plant was built at the rapids of the Kunda jõgi in 1893 to supply electricity to the cement factory. The ruins of Kunda’s first cement factory are also located in the river valley. Together, these highlight two distinct aspects of industrial history: energy supply and the beginnings of production.
Another milestone followed in the summer of 2006: during Cement Days, organized by the Cement Museum, seven cement statues of cement factory founder and manor owner John Carl Girard de Soucanton were created and installed under the direction of Simson von Seakyll. Along with the start of production in 1870 and the power plant built in 1893, this event helps place the history of cement production in chronological context and adds public art to the story.
Church Architecture and Views
Kunda Stone Church was consecrated in 1928. Its altar is at the west end, rather than at the east end as is customary. This orientation is a distinctive architectural detail in addition to the year of its consecration.
Kukerpallimägi offers sweeping views over Kunda Bay. You can rest and have a picnic on the viewing platform. This place combines a landscape vista with a specific opportunity to linger; its focus differs from that of the buildings and traces of industrial history.
River and Beach
Lontova Adventure Park is on the bank of the Kunda jõgi and adds a riverside leisure destination to the cultural and historical sites. Kunda Beach is family-friendly, and a boardwalk makes it easier to access with strollers and wheelchairs.
Seasonal offerings at Kunda Beach include a surf school, board rental and surf lessons. These offerings may change. If they are important to your stay, check before travelling whether they are available during your visit.
When to Visit and What to Focus On
One distinction is important when choosing when to visit: the history of cement production and the church’s architectural history can be understood through historical dates, while beach activities are seasonal. If the surf school, board rental or lessons are important to you, take their potential variability into account when planning. This lets you consider historical interests separately from time-dependent activities.
