If you’re looking for a hotel in Rae, your travel interests can help you decide: Rae mõis offers a glimpse into manor history, finds in Rae küla point to early settlement, and Rae raba and the Pirita–Ülemiste Canal shape the landscape. There’s also a historic military railway and a bus route that has been announced. This gives you a range of starting points for planning your trip around local history, landscape and transport.

Manor history and horticulture

Rae mõis was first mentioned in written sources in 1390. The manor got its name after it passed into the possession of Tallinn’s city council. These two details shed light on different aspects of its history: the year marks its first written mention, while the change of ownership explains how it got its name.

Horticulture is also part of the history of Rae mõis. Jaan Jürgenson, who took the family name Raeda from 1938 onward, established a selection garden and nursery at Rae mõis. Jaan Raeda’s selection garden is protected as a nature conservation site. The family name Raeda thus also appears in the name of the protected garden, connecting the garden to the person who established it.

Bog and waterway

Rae raba bog forms the northeastern boundary of Rae küla. The Pirita–Ülemiste Canal runs along the edge of the bog near the village, connecting the Pirita River with the Vaskjala Reservoir and Lake Ülemiste. The bog and canal play different roles: the bog marks a local boundary, while the canal links the named bodies of water.

Early settlement and military traces

Sacrificial stones and burial mounds in Rae küla indicate that people have lived there for several thousand years. This evidence dates back earlier than the year Rae mõis was first mentioned in writing. The settlement traces in Rae küla and the history of the manor house therefore represent different historical time periods.

A military railway connected the Rae positsiooni rooduvarjend to Tallinn. Its embankment can still be seen beneath a straight section of Raeküla tee, which runs from Rae küla to the junction with Loopera tee; visible traces can change over time. The Rae positsiooni rooduvarjend in Rae vald belongs to the III Defence Sector. The railway link to Tallinn and the shelter’s inclusion in the III Defence Sector are two distinct aspects of military history.

The precise place names make the distinction clear: the burial mounds and bog boundary are in Rae kĂĽla, while the Rae positsiooni rooduvarjend is in Rae vald.

Bus connections and tennis

The municipality announced the R20 bus route, starting on 2 September 2026, on the Uuesalu–Rae küla–Jüri route. Before travelling, check whether the service runs on your travel date.

As of 11 February 2026, the Estonian Sports Register lists an outdoor tennis court in Rae kĂĽla with one artificial grass court and artificial lighting.
