Pošná combines buildings from different centuries with a history that can be read in its churches, chapels and rural farmstead. A particularly layered example is the Church of St. Bartholomew (Kostel sv. Bartoloměje). There is also a castle in the district of Proseč and a railway viaduct in the valley of the Novodvorský potok. If you are choosing a place to stay based on your cultural and architectural interests, Pošná offers several different points of interest.

Church of St. Bartholomew: Traces of Several Eras

The Church of St. Bartholomew (Kostel sv. Bartoloměje) stands in the western part of Pošná, on a rise above the Návesní rybník. It dates from the second half of the 13th century and is a largely preserved, single-nave late Romanesque building. It has been significantly altered over time: changes were made during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and in 1680 the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. The building thus brings together different stages of its architectural history.

Notable features include valuable 14th-century Gothic wall paintings inside. This means that the building is interesting not only for its exterior: its interior also preserves evidence of an earlier decorative phase. The cemetery grounds are partly enclosed by a boundary wall. Together, the elevated location, church and walled section of the cemetery form a distinctive historic site within Pošná. If you are planning a specific visit, check access to the building in advance.

Chapel, Memorial Cross and Wayside Shrine

A small, rustic, masonry chapel from the 19th century stands on the village green. It has a square ground plan with slightly chamfered corners. A pyramidal roof topped by a four-sided lantern sits above the building. The chapel’s clearly defined forms also make it an interesting example of smaller rural religious buildings.

A stone memorial crucifix from 1884 stands in a prominent spot in front of its entrance. The Kaple s křížem ensemble comprises a small rustic village chapel and a stone memorial cross erected in front of it, with a cast-iron corpus of Christ; the cross also bears the date 1884. Another stone landmark can be found on the eastern edge of Pošná, on the road to Zahrádka: the wayside shrine is designed in the late Gothic style and bears the incised date 1609. These structures allow you to view different forms and dates side by side without treating them as a single architectural ensemble.

Proseč and Rural Building History

A Baroque castle from the 18th century stands in the district of Proseč in Pošná. It was originally built as a Renaissance fortress with two side rondels; today the building serves as a care home. Its current use is as much a part of understanding the castle as its architectural history. It is surrounded by a naturally landscaped park enclosed by a picket fence with pillars.

A complete rural farmstead is another example of Pošná’s architectural heritage. It consists of masonry farm buildings and a timber dwelling with a tripartite floor plan. This unusually well-preserved farmstead is considered valuable evidence of the development of rural buildings in the 19th century. Together with the castle, chapels and church, it broadens the view beyond individual religious buildings to encompass different forms of historic construction.

The Viaduct in the Novodvorský potok Valley

Another structure stands near Pošná: the monumental railway viaduct was built around 1888 on the Horní Cerekev–Tábor railway line. It crosses the deep valley of the Novodvorský potok in a gentle curve. Eleven arches rest on four-sided conical piers; the viaduct is built of rubble stone. Its impact can be appreciated both through the form of the structure and its setting in the valley. Its date and the named railway line identify it as an example of transport infrastructure history, without making any claims about current rail services.

These varied points of interest may help you choose where to stay: Pošná’s attractions range from medieval church architecture and wall paintings to rural building styles and a large railway viaduct. This makes it possible to choose a hotel stay based on your own interest in history and architecture, without reducing Pošná to a single landmark.
