Pelhrimov brings together architecture, exhibitions, and scenic views. If you are looking for a specific way to explore the city during your stay, a walking tour through different architectural styles offers a good thematic introduction. The museums focus on other subjects, ranging from local history and regional traditions to historical exhibitions. An observation tower and two different walking routes round out the options.

Architecture and city history

The self-guided Stezka po stavebních slozích takes you past examples of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Cubist, Art Nouveau, Classicist, and Functionalist architecture on a short route. The seven architectural styles form the route’s guiding theme and make architectural variety its main focus. Pelhrimov was declared an urban heritage conservation area because of its architectural coherence.

The Muzeum Vysočiny Pelhřimov is located in Zámek pánů z Říčan. The Freskový sál is the most prestigious room in the former castle. This brings together the museum’s present-day use and a notable room from the castle’s past in one place—a fitting addition if, alongside architectural styles, you are also interested in the history of individual historic rooms.

Exhibitions with different focuses

The Expozice Pelhřimov - historie - současnost offers several ways to explore the city’s history: information panels, an interactive display with historical films about the Pelhřimovsko region, information on the development of the city coat of arms, and a three-dimensional model of the city’s settlement. Historical films, information about the coat of arms, and a spatial model are presented side by side.

The Muzeum strašidel displays ghosts and other supernatural beings said to be encountered in the Vysočina region, in a cellar on Masarykovo náměstí. Its regional theme differs significantly from the exhibitions on city history. You can therefore choose based on whether you are more interested in Pelhrimov’s history or the region’s supernatural beings.

The Městská šatlava presents a historical exhibition based on the authenticity of the location and extensive source material. The exhibition includes a torture chamber with original instruments and precise replicas; its furnishings reflect the period from the 16th to the 18th century. The historical period covered and the combination of originals and replicas give this visit a different focus from the exhibition on city history.

Walking tours and views

The Muzeum rekordů a kuriozit is the only museum of its kind in Central Europe. The Procházka českou knihou rekordů walking tour connects it with Zlaté české ručičky. If you are interested in records and curiosities, this named tour can guide your visit; it brings the two attractions together in a single offering.

The observation tower of the sv. Bartoloměje church offers views of Pelhrimov and its surroundings from a height of 30 metres. For a different experience, there is the Naučná stezka Městské sady: it consists of twelve information panels arranged along a circular route almost three kilometres long. The observation tower is the choice for a view from above, while the walking route offers a trail with several information points.

Getting there and planning your stay

Pelhrimov can be reached by bus or train, as well as by bicycle or on foot. If you plan to travel by bus or train, check the timetable in advance. When choosing what to do, you can compare the short architecture route, the circular route almost three kilometres long, and the observation tower according to their different focuses. There are also exhibitions covering topics from architectural styles and city history to regional supernatural beings and historical torture instruments.
