If you are considering Mastník as a destination for a hotel stay, its cycling routes, the lookout tower on Pekelný kopec, and the town’s history give you concrete points of interest. These range from a poet’s memorial and a Baroque chapel to historical traces of graphite mining.

Cycling routes through and to Mastník

Hiking trails and cycling paths run through Mastník. A section of the Jihlava–Třebíč–Raabs cycling route also passes through the town. For a cycling trip from Třebíč, cycling route 5212 leads to the outskirts of Mastník; if you take a shortened route, you can then head straight to the lookout tower on Pekelný kopec. This describes two different route connections: one route passes through Mastník, while the other reaches the outskirts and can be shortened to continue to the tower. Check the current route before setting off.

Pekelný kopec and the lookout tower

At 572 metres, Pekelný kopec is the highest point in Mastník. A 26.5-metre-high lookout tower stands on it, with 125 steps leading to the viewing platform. These figures describe three different things: the highest point, the height of the structure, and the number of steps to the platform. If the tower factors into your plans, you can consider these measurements separately rather than interpreting them as the route length or walking time.

Memorial and chapel

A bust of Jan Zahradníček is located on the façade of the house at Mastník 20. It marks Mastník as the birthplace of the poet, who lived from 1905 to 1960. The connection is therefore tied both to a specific address and to a person: the bust is the memorial, while the birthplace information explains its significance to the town.

Mastník is also home to a Baroque chapel of the Virgin Mary dating from 1766. The bust and the chapel offer different cultural points of interest: one is a memorial to a poet, while the other is a religious building with a specific year of construction. Along with the lookout tower, they add further themes to your stay beyond the routes.

Local history in several stages

Mastník was first mentioned in written records in 1407. In 1468, the town was burned down during the wars between the Bohemian King George of Poděbrady and the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus. Toward the end of the 15th century, Mastník became part of the Sádek estate. This sequence spans the first written mention, a turning point in the 15th-century wars, and the town’s later historical affiliation.

Graphite mining marks another chapter: graphite was mined in Mastník from 1913 to 1921. Mining was discontinued because the deposit yielded little. This limited period of mining adds a chapter of industrial history to the town’s older history. You can distinguish between the different periods rather than reducing Mastník’s past to a single event or building.

Leisure in town

Mastník has a public sports ground for leisure activities. Along with the hiking trails and cycling paths, it is another aspect of the local leisure offering. When choosing your destination, you can compare the routes, the lookout tower, and local history with your own interests.
