In Maleč, there are several different ways to plan your stay: a trail through the Doubrava landscape, an open-air geology exhibition and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Maleč, you can first consider whether nature, geology or local history will shape your stay. These different themes offer more than one way to experience the village, without prescribing a particular order.

Trail, Doubrava and Fossil Hunting

The “Za hejkaly do Železných hor a na zámek Maleč” trail runs around Maleč Castle through a landscape of old trees along the Doubrava. The shorter version is suitable for cycling and for all-terrain strollers. The Maleč Trail also includes a sheep bridge and the opportunity to search for fossils. As well as the route itself, specific features are part of the experience: the bridge along the trail and fossil hunting as a possible activity along the way.

If you are planning to cycle or use an all-terrain stroller, the shorter version is the relevant option. The route’s suitability may change depending on maintenance and weather. Check trail conditions before setting out. No specific walking or cycling time is given for the trail, so the main planning information is the choice between the stated versions.

Rocks in the Open Air

The open-air geology exhibition in Maleč features rocks from the surrounding area and from the Železné hory National Geopark. This brings rock specimens from two stated areas of origin into focus. The exhibition offers a different theme from the trail, which runs through the Doubrava landscape and includes a sheep bridge and the opportunity to search for fossils.

The exhibition is freely accessible and has an information board and a worksheet with seven questions. The board and questions give the visit a concrete framework: you can look at the rocks and use the questions as prompts. Access, materials and individual exhibits may change, so check the current visiting conditions before your visit.

Maleč Castle and Its History

Maleč Castle is presented as a memorial to F. L. Rieger and F. Palacký. Its historical connection with Palacký is closely associated with the castle: František Palacký spent the last 14 years of his life there. The exhibition includes restored interiors with original furnishings, as well as the preserved studies of Rieger and Palacký. Alongside its role as a memorial, specific rooms and furnishings are also a focus. The exhibition content may change following future renovations.

Church, Village Square and Historic Route

The Protestant church in Maleč was built between 1891 and 1894 in the Neo-Renaissance style, with a tower. It was ceremonially opened on 28 June 1896. The construction period and opening are two separate milestones in its history, giving the building a clear place in time.

On the village square, Baroque statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint John of Nepomuk form a group with a cross and a wooden bell tower. The sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary is dated to 1685; the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from 1707. The two dates place the figures in time, while the cross and bell tower are part of the described ensemble.

The historic Libická stezka route is also part of the village’s history: Maleč lies along this route. This is another historical connection alongside the description of the Maleč Trail. During your stay, you can therefore distinguish between a specifically described tour through the landscape, geological themes and historic buildings.
