Křeč – Rotunda, Frescoes and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Křeč
Křeč combines historic buildings with features of the surrounding landscape. The Church of St. James the Greater is a prominent landmark: it stands on a hill in the southern part of Křeč and is visible from a great distance.
Church of St. James the Greater
The surviving remains of a Romanesque rotunda in the church suggest that the area of present-day Křeč was already inhabited in the 12th century. The term “rotunda” refers to a circular building and thus identifies the remains as a specific architectural form. The church also has 14th-century frescoes. The remains of the rotunda and the frescoes therefore provide two distinct historical points of reference: early settlement history on the one hand and medieval wall paintings on the other.
Parish Complex and Restoration Details
The parish complex in Křeč, in the Pelhřimov District, was restored from 2016 to 2018. During the work, surviving painted decorations featuring small rose blossoms on wooden shutters were discovered and conserved. The rose blossoms form a delicate individual motif within the restoration. The complex also includes a two-storey residential building from the second half of the 18th century. The dates refer to different things: 2016 to 2018 are the years of the restoration, while the second half of the 18th century is the period to which the residential building dates.
Landscape and Waterways
The municipal area of Křeč lies on a deforested upland plateau, unusual for the western edge of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. South of Křeč is the settlement of Svatá Anna, surrounded by woodland; a church of the same name stands there. The landscapes differ: the deforested plateau defines the municipal area, while Svatá Anna is characterized by its wooded surroundings.
The waterways also have different points of reference. The Javornička stream forms the southeastern edge of the cadastral area of Křeč, while the Křečský potok rises from the village pond in Křeč. The first describes a boundary, the second the source of a stream. In this way, the landform, boundary line and source of a waterway can be distinguished as separate spatial features.
Historical Traces in the Village
Hrádek Castle stood on a hill and was fortified with walls and rocks. It was located in the Josafatské Valley northwest of Křeč and is mentioned in the 1379 urbarium of the Rosenberg estates. An urbarium is an estate register; the year links the mention of Hrádek to a specific historical document.
A stone monument shaped like a chalice stands on the right-hand side of the road from Křeč to Černovice, at the presumed site of the battle. The location is therefore only presumed. House No. 5 is also one of the notable buildings in Křeč. These landmarks differ in form: a castle mentioned in a historical document, a monument at a presumed battlefield and a notable building stand side by side.
