Mlékojedy on the Elbe: Church, Floodplain Landscape and Brewery
Accommodation in Mlékojedy
Mlékojedy on the left bank of the Elbe
Mlékojedy lies on the left bank of the Elbe; the river separates the town from Litoměřice. Road II/247 and the Generál-Chábera Bridge connect Mlékojedy with Litoměřice. If you are considering Mlékojedy as a destination for a hotel stay, its local attractions can help you narrow down your choice: church architecture and pilgrimage, river and floodplain landscapes, or the brewery.
Church and local history
The Church of St Martin (“Kostel sv. Martina”) combines several architectural periods. Its core dates to the 14th century; it was mentioned as a parish church in 1384. The renovation of 1776 shaped its present-day Late Baroque form. The reference to it as a parish church and its later renovation describe different historical aspects: its ecclesiastical function and the appearance of the building. The church and rectory are protected as immovable cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. The medieval core predates the Late Baroque appearance.
Several gravestones remain in the former cemetery north of the church. The cemetery is enclosed by a cast-iron fence with Gothic Revival forms dating from 1885. These details add a distinct, datable element of the cemetery grounds to the history of the church building.
The annual St Martin’s pilgrimage of Mlékojedy takes place in the church. Since it reopened several years ago, the number of participants has grown each year. If you are planning to attend the pilgrimage, check the date for the relevant year.
The Elbe, floodplains and nature trail
The Elbe’s watercourse and floodplain axis of the supranational biocorridor “Stříbrný roh – Polabský luh” runs through Mlékojedy. The local “Písečný ostrov” biocentre encompasses an island and a former river channel with valuable floodplain communities, and is of entomological importance. A former river channel is an earlier course of the river alongside its present course; the reference to entomological importance relates to insect life. Thus, the supranational Elbe corridor and a locally named biocentre represent two different scales of the floodplain landscape.
The “Naučná stezka skřítka Portáše – Porta Bohemica – Krajem pověstí a zážitků” nature trail connects all the municipalities in the microregion, including Mlékojedy. Established in 2015, the trail is 30 km long in total and has 16 stops. Its total length and number of stops give you a specific outline of the route; obtain local information about the route before your trip.
Brewery and travel planning
The “Hákův parní pivovar” in Mlékojedy produces several types of beer, both top-fermented and bottom-fermented. All the beers carry the “České středohoří regionální produkt” regional product label. As certifications can change, check the current labeling if needed. The brewery is open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; check the opening hours before your visit.
