If you are planning a hotel stay in Měrunice, the landscape offers a first clue to the character of the place. Měrunice lies in the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. Named hills and a ridge define the southern and southwestern surroundings; the church and historic sites add to the picture of the town’s history. This allows you to understand the destination through specific geographical features and historical connections.

A landscape with clear directions

To the south, Vraník and other hills on the horizon form the impressive backdrop to Měrunice. To the southwest, the rounded Dobský hřbet ridge defines and clearly marks the landscape around Žichov and Měrunice. The two directions represent different landscape features: the southern backdrop on one side and the boundary of the shared area on the other. In this description, Dobský hřbet connects Žichov and Měrunice, while Vraník, together with other hills, shapes the southern horizon.

Granátka and its geological history

Granátka is a small hill about 300 m south of Měrunice. Toward the end of the Tertiary period, Granátka was a volcano. Opalescent serpentinites, named garnets because of their distinctive color, are still found on the hill. This brings together several geological aspects at a named location: its approximate position south of Měrunice, its volcanic past and the serpentinites found there today. The span of time between its formation and the rock deposits described as present to this day makes Granátka a specific point of reference for the geology of the area.

The church and historical points of reference

The Church of Saint Stanislaus is one of Měrunice’s most valuable sights and is now an important cultural monument. Martin Vchyňský was the church’s patron in 1386. This building thus brings together a specific historical name and year with its present-day significance as a cultural monument. The church offers a different point of reference for local history than Granátka: here, the focus is on patronage and cultural heritage rather than geological origins.

The fortified manor and the Žichov fortress site

The fortified manor in Měrunice was first mentioned in 1295 and remains part of a farmstead. The Žichov fortress site (Tvrziště Žichov) offers a separate historical point of reference: it is a fortification dating from the 13th century and was first mentioned in 1239. The site lies north of Žichov, near the Lužice II reservoir, on a low spur bordered by the water and the Žichovský potok stream. The two historic sites can be distinguished by different features: in Měrunice, the manor remains part of a farmstead; in Žichov, the spur, body of water and stream define the location of the fortress site. The dates also have different meanings: 1295 is the first mention of the manor, while the fortress site is additionally dated to the 13th century.

An event and regional orientation

A municipal ball (Obecní ples) was held in Měrunice in each of the years 2024, 2025 and 2026. If you are planning a stay for this event, check the date for the relevant travel year. For regional orientation, Měrunice lies near the Class II road 257, which connects Bílina and Louny. The road number and the two place names give you a specific regional point of reference, while the landscape features and historic sites offer a closer picture of the destination’s character.
