If you are looking for a hotel in Horní Beřkovice, you can choose to explore the town through different interests. The history of the castle and park is one strand; sacred architecture and local memorials offer other perspectives. The biography of musician Klementina Kalašová, who was born in Horní Beřkovice, adds another. Cycling is also mentioned in an older visitor information guide to the town. When planning, you can therefore consider cultural interests and a possible bike ride separately.

Castle, Park, and Historical Memorials

Horní Beřkovice Castle was built between 1738 and 1756 by Count Adam František Hartig. Its complex includes an extensive park, landscaped in the English style in the early 19th century. The periods are clearly distinct: the castle was built in the 18th century, while the park was landscaped in the early 19th century. A psychiatric hospital was established in the castle in 1890, marking another turning point in the town’s history. The bricked-up former main gate is visible in the perimeter wall above the current fire station. There is a fountain in the courtyard of honor, and a statue of Hygieia stands in front of the northwest façade. The cenotaph of Antoinetta Hartigová, created by František Xaver Lederer, was built in the castle park between 1790 and 1792.

Church and Cultural History

The Horní Beřkovice Multifunctional Center is housed in the renovated Art Nouveau Church of St. Wenceslas, on the grounds of the psychiatric hospital. The church was consecrated in 1942. During the occupation, an altar from Prague’s Straka Academy was brought to the church to protect it from destruction. The church thus combines sacred architecture with a history of protecting cultural heritage. If you are planning an event, please check the current schedule and access rules. Another cultural thread leads to Klementina Kalašová. She was born on September 9, 1850, in the former Baroque castle in Horní Beřkovice. Her artistic career began with piano studies under Bedřich Smetana in Prague. In 1869, she achieved her first major success at the Imperial Opera in Saint Petersburg.

Local Memorials

Local memorials beyond the castle grounds also commemorate specific events. The White Cross at the edge of Horní Beřkovice, in the direction of Mělník, is an iron cross erected in 1855. It commemorates the rescue of Emperor Franz Joseph I after his carriage horses bolted. Another iron cross stands by the chapel at the lower gate of the psychiatric hospital. It was erected in 1853 in gratitude for the recovery of Luis, the son of Count František Desfours-Walde Rode. The two crosses commemorate different events: the emperor’s rescue and the recovery of a count’s son. Historically, the Horní Beřkovice pilgrimage was traditionally held in early July to commemorate the burning of Jan Hus.

Regional Setting and Cycling

In the surrounding Podřipsko area, Říp Mountain and the Rotunda of St. George on its summit are considered the most visited site in the entire region. A municipal visitor information guide, published on March 14, 2010, describes local cycling routes through easy terrain that were unofficial at the time, and considers them suitable for families with children. Check local route conditions before setting out.
