Three topics are especially useful for finding your way around on a trip to Chlumec U Chabařovic: architectural history, the memory of the 1813 battle, and trails with different themes. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can consider whether you are more interested in historic buildings, memorial sites or a particular route. The church, chapel and monument each offer a distinct perspective.

Churches, a chapel and historic architectural styles

St. Havel’s Church was built between 1847 and 1852. Inside are figurative Renaissance tombs of the Kölbl family dating from 1606 to 1619. The grounds also include a perimeter wall with an entrance gate and a bell tower. The church stands on a raised spur of land. The site thus brings together features of the church grounds and funerary art from a much earlier period.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity commemorates the end of the plague epidemic of 1680. Its 1691 wall frescoes depict the Te Deum. The floor plan is also distinctive: it is shaped like an equilateral triangle. The occasion, subject matter and architectural form offer different points of entry when exploring the history of religious buildings. Martínkovna, which documents the traditional vernacular architecture of Chlumec, provides another facet of the town’s history.

Remembering the 1813 battle

The Battle of Chlumec took place on August 29 and 30, 1813, near Chlumec and Přestanov in northern Bohemia. The battle monument stands on the eastern edge of Chlumec, at the foot of Horka. It was erected in 1913 to mark the centenary. The 26-metre Art Nouveau monument is topped by a sculpture of a lion. The dates of the battle and the monument make tangible the passage of time between the event and its later commemoration.

The battle is also the focus of an annual gathering at Horka. Since 1992, on the last Saturday in August, people interested in the Napoleonic Wars and members of military history societies have gathered there for presentations on the military history of the period. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with this gathering, check the specific event dates in advance.

Trails with different themes

The Chlumeck Way of the Cross starts at St. Havel’s Church and climbs around the basalt hill of Horka to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It consists of fourteen sandstone niche chapels. It therefore leads from a named starting point to a clearly identified destination, linking the two church sites with a series of stations.

There are other hiking options, each with its own focus. The green trail runs from Chlumec past the U Laviček viewpoint and around Mravenčí vrch; it is about seven kilometres long. The 7.5-kilometre yellow trail passes through Chlumec, connects memorial sites and other significant locations from the battle, and leads to Horka and the 1813 centenary monument. The destinations described distinguish the routes: the green trail’s route description highlights the viewpoint and Mravenčí vrch, while the yellow trail’s focuses on the battle sites and monument.

Another option is the approximately four-kilometre family route, which includes activities, puzzles and a map. It is shorter than the two hiking trails and is also distinguished from their stated focuses by its activities and puzzles. You can therefore make your choice based on distance and theme without treating the routes as equivalent.

Cycling route and train connection

Cycling route 3009 runs directly through Chlumec and is about 33 kilometres long in total. For travel to the area, the Podkrušnohorský motoráček stops at Chlumec railway station. As train services may change, check the latest service information before travelling.
