Závist combines religious landmarks, village festivals and access to nearby forests. The brick bell tower, the stone cross beside the chapel and the round well offer glimpses into the village’s history. Event dates and available transport and walking routes are also important when planning your stay.

Landmarks and Local History

The brick bell tower stands on the village green. Mariana Šumanová, the widow of a local innkeeper, had it built in 1833; it was dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity. The tower underwent extensive renovation in 2014. The stone cross beside the chapel bears the date 1857 and, with its stone design, also refers to the Most Holy Trinity.

The round well in Závist was restored in 2000. It still receives water from the former municipal water supply, whose springs were located above the village. If you would like to see the water flow during your visit, check its current status in advance.

Village Festivals and Events

Village festivals in Závist take place on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity; the exact date may vary from year to year. So if you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the current dates. The Masopust procession and Závistské hody are the biggest social event of the year in Závist. At a procession on a March weekend in 2025, there were original costumes and humorous scenes; the route went through the village and included stops for refreshments.

Local traditions also include raising a maypole on the village green. The traditional Christmas gathering of residents is also held there, around the Christmas tree; it includes a ceremonial lighting of the tree and a performance by children. Under the auspices of the municipality, the library organizes cultural events several times a year, including a kite festival and a St. Nicholas celebration. Individual event dates may change; check the relevant dates before your trip.

Nature and Routes

Závist offers access to nearby deep forests and unspoiled nature for recreation. Marked cycle route 5221 runs along the northern edge of the cadastral area. Check its current status before setting out. No marked hiking trail passes through the cadastral area, so also check current route conditions before planning a hike.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

There is a bus stop with pull-in bays and a shelter on road I/43 in the built-up part of Závist. A separate pedestrian path connects it to the village. If you are considering traveling by bus, check the timetable for your travel date.

The nearest railway station is in Rájec-Jestřebí, about 10 km away, on ČD railway line No. 260 between Prague, Česká Třebová and Brno. The distance is approximate; check current train connections before traveling.

The busy I/43 divides Závist into two parts and makes it difficult to cross safely between them. If your stay includes destinations on both sides of the road, take its layout into account when finding your way around.
