Vémyslice: Culture, Nature and Tradition
Accommodation in Vémyslice
Vémyslice offers clearly distinct highlights for trip planning: Gothic architectural history, a living folk costume tradition, a festival held annually in October, natural history and a 52-kilometre cycling loop.
Church and Monuments
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Vémyslice is a Gothic church dating from around the turn of the 14th century. The wayside shrine stands opposite it, and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is located in the village square. With its approximate dating, the church provides a historical point of reference. The locations of the two other monuments help place them: one stands opposite the church, while the statue is in the village square. Their settings distinguish them, even though all three contribute to Vémyslice’s cultural character.
Folk Costume and Svatováclavské Hody
The folk costume of Vémyslice is the only still-living tradition in the Moravskokrumlovsko region that has never been reconstructed and has survived to this day. Another cultural highlight is the Svatováclavské hody. They take place every year on the Sunday in October closest to the feast of Saint Wenceslas on 28 September, and are registered as an intangible asset of South Moravian folk culture. The exact Sunday depends on the calendar for that year, so check the date locally before your trip. The folk costume and the festival have different time frames: the costume is a tradition that has survived to this day, while the hody are an annual event tied to the calendar. So if you want to plan your trip around the festival, the date for that particular year is what matters.
Natural History and Landscape
The Na Kocourkách area is notable as a palaeontological site. It also features semi-natural dry grasslands and shrub formations on calcareous ground. This brings together two distinct natural features: palaeontological significance and specific vegetation types on calcareous soil. For trip-planning purposes, Na Kocourkách can be considered a nature highlight in its own right, alongside Vémyslice’s historical and cultural attractions.
The location of Kemp Vémyslice offers a different connection with nature: it is in a natural area through which the Rokytná stream flows. This landscape setting offers a different perspective on nature in Vémyslice from the palaeontological site and its dry grasslands. You can include these as separate themes in your plans without combining them into a single route.
Cycling Loop and Natural Swimming Pool
A 52-kilometre cycling loop runs from Vémyslice through Moravský Krumlov, Budkovice, Ivančice, Moravské Bránice, Dolní Kounice, Jezeřany-Maršovice and Vedrovice, and back to Vémyslice. Returning to Vémyslice makes it a loop; its total length is a concrete planning detail if you want to include cycling in your stay. Road and surface conditions may change. Check them before setting off so that your plans reflect current conditions.
The Vémyslice natural swimming pool has a 150 × 50-metre swimming pool and a children’s pool. If you want to include it in your plans, check that it is currently open before visiting. The cycling loop and the natural swimming pool offer different kinds of interest: one centres on a measured route, the other on a facility with the pools described above.
