Local history at a glance
Újezd U Tišnova offers travelers interested in local history several distinct historical periods and themes to explore. The settlement probably originated before the founding of the Porta coeli Monastery in Předklášteří in 1232; Újezd was first mentioned in writing in 1350. Other features include a church with Romanesque architectural elements, remains of a medieval settlement nearby and local traces from later centuries. The various accounts span the presumed early settlement through to dated objects from the 20th century.
History and architectural features
The early history of the village can be placed in context using two dates: the settlement is thought to have originated before 1232, while 1350 marks its first written mention. Újezd also became the center of economic activity for the Vladykové z Drahan. This connection adds the village’s economic role to its settlement history.
The Church of St. Giles (sv. Jiljí) is another early landmark. Romanesque architectural elements suggest that it was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century. Different types of historical dating can therefore be considered side by side: the presumed origin of the settlement, the church’s construction period inferred from its architectural features, and the later written mention in 1350.
Another trace of local history can be found near Újezd U Tišnova, on the wooded ridge of Hrádek. There are remains of a fortified settlement made of wood and clay, dating from the 14th century. These remains provide a different historical reference point from the Church of St. Giles, which was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century.
When finding your way around Hrádek, it is important to distinguish between the hiking trail that passes by and the access route to the remains. A red-marked hiking trail from Tišnov passes Hrádek; the remains themselves can only be reached from the northwest side. From the road, a footpath crosses the ridge and passes two cottages. Check the current trail markings on site; terrain conditions can also vary.
Other local highlights
Two crosses made of Nedvědice marble stand on the road to the church and in the village center. Both were erected at the residents’ expense in the 1880s. Their dates place them in a different period from the medieval traces at Hrádek and the church. A mill in Újezd has equipment dating from 1937, adding an example of local industrial heritage from the 20th century to the village’s history.
A distinctive natural landmark is Babyka u Chytálek, also known as Babyka u Cytálek, a protected solitary tree. It is a field maple in the cadastral area of Újezd U Tišnova. The Obecník pond is also a local recreation spot: it was used for ice skating during the winter months. This seasonal use depended on winter conditions.
